DRAFT HORSES—STUDY

Olivia (Livvy) Schemanski . Pen and ink . 6½ " × 9." (17cm × 24cm)

Study in Old Master Technique

Draft Horses—Study was a study of technique. I had the privilege of purchasing an original 1639 Rembrandt intaglio print, and I became fascinated with his use of delicate line and simple composition. After careful study of his technique, I applied the combination of traditional hatch and free-flowing scribbles shown here. Hatching the horses helps create volume and form, while scribbles in the supporting landscape maintain a sense of freedom and movement. The ultra-fine pen tip imitates the single-stroke style of copperplate intaglio. My reference was a family photo taken in the 1930s. Just as Rembrandt chose to render working people and everyday life, I decided to depict these horses because they express the solidity and calmness of the working class.
