How did she keep getting more beautiful?

Enzo unlocked his own condo and went through his routine. Keys on the hook, mail in the bin, boots on the rack, work clothes off, comfy clothes on. But his mind was still in the bedroom next door.

Every time he saw her it was like meeting her for the first time all over again. When he’d seen 50 First Dates as a teen, he’d thought the amnesia plot was a little hokey but the walrus jokes saved it. Now he could see the appeal of sticking around to see who this amazing woman would be from day to day.

Enzo’s mind whirled with the many faces of Natalie before coming to rest on the way she looked after he’d made her come. He’d changed into mesh shorts, an old gray T-shirt and gym shoes for his run with Buster. He couldn’t think about that mental image before heading back out in public. Trying to calm back down, he pictured her in her partially done makeup from earlier.

He’d clearly interrupted her work on a new look, but even halfway primped, she captivated him. He’d debated going to her for a kiss, but decided against it, given the proximity of Daisy and the likelihood he wouldn’t be able to stop there. He wished he could stay, but he was already pushing his luck with Buster.

He grabbed his keys and unlocked Frankie’s door, bracing for impact. Strong paws landed on his stomach in a familiar greeting, and Enzo rubbed the broad head trying to nuzzle his chest. Buster was supposed to be a guard dog for the construction sites, but this was his signature greeting. He’d never met a stranger, only a friend not yet made. The only way he was taking someone down was if he caught him unawares with his gut punch.

“Hey there, Buster. Ready for your dinner?” The black and white Staffordshire bulldog/Lab/mutt mix ran in frantic circles around him as he tried to get the door closed and into the kitchen without tripping. Frankie was late often enough that Enzo arriving for dinner and a walk wasn’t a surprise for the active pup.

Enzo poured kibble into the stainless steel bowl on the floor and got out of the way before Buster muscled him aside. He’d landed on his ass a time or two before he’d learned to be quick about it.

While Buster inhaled his chow, Enzo conducted a quick survey of the apartment, looking for damage. Chew toys and rawhide bones littered the living room, but no missing table legs or shredded couch pillows, so that was good. He peeked into the bedroom, where it looked like a bomb went off.

The quilt hung drunkenly off the bed, clothes strewn everywhere, a pile of knocked-over books next to the bed. In other words, completely normal. Frankie had always been a slob, one of the side effects of being the baby. There had always been someone bigger to help clean up, usually Enzo. He’d noticed Natalie’s bedroom had been spotless.
