Chapter 14
âWhat the fuck did you do, Greg?â Rickyâs voice blasted through the phone.
Greg rolled over in bed. Sweaty legs tangled in sweaty sheets. Heâd tossed and turned throughout the morning since getting home from Carlosâs house, his lips still bruised from kissing the man and his head still spinning from the encounter with Sammy, the knowledge that Carlos was single now, and everything else.
Sleep had eluded him, and even beating off to relieve his tension had ended in more frustration. Too much going on in his brain. Heâd tried pulling out a battery-operated toy to ease the pressure, only the vibrator was completely out of commission. He hadnât used the thing in awhile. Was it possible for a sex toy to die of loneliness?
Gregâs mood was cloudy and dark, his body weighed a ton and he didnât want to get out of bed. Especially now that heâd finally drifted off, only to be jerked awake by Rickyâs call and a whole lot of yelling.
âWhat the hell are you squawking about?â Greg kicked the sheets off. âI didnât do anything.â
âBullshit,â Ricky barked. âI just got done wrangling my brother and soon-to-be ex into the funny farm, and now Iâve got a message on my voicemail from Carlos saying heâs quitting, effective immediately.â
Sharp, icy guilt plunged into Gregâs chest. He had forgotten Carlos had said heâd quit. Heâd figured theyâd both cool off, theyâd talk later....
He sat up in bed. âYou think heâs serious?â
âYou tell me. He said family issues, but Iâm guessing that ainât true. He said if we needed notice heâd give it, but heâd prefer to have it be effective immediately.â An impatient huff. âSo I repeat. What did you do?â
Greg tensed when his feet hit the floor. Even in the summer the floors in his motherâs house were freezing. He had to get his own place. âSo tell him we need notice. We have to find a replacement.â He stretched and yawned, naked and sporting uncomfortable morning woodâgoddamn itâand searched around in a drawer for clean clothes, which were in short supply. He hadnât done laundry and couldnât stand to re-wear anything from the bars. Everything stank like an ashtray.
He pulled on a pair of jeans so uncomfortable he usually only wore them to go dancing at the clubs. He put the phone on speaker so he could stuff his junk inside, figuring the pain served him as some sort of penance for his fuckups, and threw on a muscle shirt.
âIâm waiting,â Ricky growled.
âIâll go talk to him,â Greg said. âIâm getting dressed now.â Urgency pounded through his muscles. Anxiety. Pissed off as he might have been, he didnât want Carlos to quit his job. Seeing Carlos every day, even if it was only that hour or so when Greg was wrapping up day shift and Carlos had come in to start work.
Greg shook his head. None of Gregâs damn concern who was over at Carlosâs house at seven in the morning. His gut clenched in response to the thought.
