Noon was the hottest part of the day. John had always figured that, at least. Maybe thatâs the way it worked in the rest of the world. But in this place, this thing that passed for a town but was more like the canvas of a nightmare, noon was just foreplay. The heat was only getting started in Sierra.
He sat on the edge of the bed, shirtless, sweaty, looking out the window. Somewhere, miles out into the desert, he had traded his freedom in for a good fuck.
A great fuck.
John and Grace had had that kind of sex which starts in the hall on the way to the bedroom âcause youâre too horny to wait for something soft to screw on. The sex went down a wall, to the floorâtumbling around more than a few times while clothes were awkwardly sheared offâover up against some furniture as bodies tussled probing, looking, feeling for matching parts. Then the sex went one more time toward the bed, because thatâs whereâinstinctivelyâit figured it should be. It never actually made it. Things got finished up next to the dust bunnies in the corner.
In fact, in the end, the only thing the bed was good for was resting after the workout was well over.
Grace lay next to John, naked, sweaty, stroking his back. The sun tore through the window and glistened off the sheen on their bodies.
âHow far is it to California?â she asked.
âFrom here? I donât know. Far. Far enough.â
âHave you been there before?â
âYeah.â
âIs it pretty?â
John nodded. âBeautiful. Beautiful beaches. Blue water and blue skies as far as you can see.â
Grace sat up. She slid her hands under Johnâs arms to his chest and pulled him close. Her erect nipples poked at his back.
She said, âTake me with you.â
To the point: âI canât.â
âPlease. I wonât hang on you. As soon as we get there, you can dump me. I donât care. I just want to get out of here.â
âGrace, I canât. I canât even get out of here myself. I need a hundred fifty bucks just to get my car from that crazy mechanic.â
Lips pressed to Johnâs cheek, Graceâs breath came hot in his ear. âI know where we could get money. A lot more than one hundred fifty dollars.â
John rounded the edge off his curiosity. âWhere?â
âJake.â She stroked at his back again.
âYou think Jakeâs going to give me money just so I can take you out of here ?â
âHe doesnât give it to us.â Her fingernails ran the length of his spine. Five red lines raised up on his back. âWe take it,â she said.
âTake it? Take it from where?â
âJakeâs got money. In a floor safe in the living room. He talks about it all the time. More like brags. He loves his money. Wouldnât think of spending a little on me.â
âYou live all right.â
âYeah. A bird in a gilded cage.â
John worked hard to sound casual. As casual as someone could when talking about someone elseâs money. âHow much has he got?â
âNear as I can figure, must be aboutâ¦one hundred thousand dollars.
