Chapter Six
~ Max~
âWell, good morning, sleepy head,â I chirped at a very grumpy River.
Her hair was up in a messy bun, and she wore some sort of cartoon pajama pants with an ugly Christmas sweater. Making her the most beautiful woman in the world. Although, her scowl was meant to keep everyone away.
âYouâre too fucking happy for this inglorious hour. Whereâs that coffee you promised me?â she asked, closing the door behind her. She patted her back pocket, confirming her keycard was there.
âIn the car.â I pointed towards where Iâd parked. âI figured youâd need more than one cup, so I made you one at home. You can have another at Ellaâs.â
Her lips arched to one side as she debated if she wanted anything to do with me. âFine, youâve seduced me into your car. For not being my type, you sure as hell have gotten me to do more than any other guy has.â
Jealousy pushed up from my soul. I didnât want to think of her with other men or that I didnât fit whatever was her type. I ached to be the only man she ever thought of for the rest of her days.
As we got to the car, I couldnât help myself. I grabbed her hips, catching her off guard, and lifted her onto the hood of my car. My arms circled to her back as I stepped between her legs. Then I kissed her. A hungry and desperate kiss essential for me to calm down. River had a past. That didnât mean shit to me. I did, too, but moving forward, itâd be just us.
When we came up for air, my lips turned up into a smile as I looked down at my handy work. Riverâs lips were swollen, her eyes were a little dazed, and her hands gripped my shirt. She wanted me just as much as I wanted her. She might not admit it out loudâ¦yet, but I had a chance.
âWho needs caffeine when you got a sexy man to wake you up?â she joked once we got into the car and I handed her the insulated cup of coffee.
âIâve been upgraded to sexy? Man, Iâm doing better than I thought.â I turned on the car then drove off to the restaurant.
She rolled her eyes at me. âIâm sure plenty of women call you sexy. Didnât you say you were the most eligible bachelor?â
âOh, that. Yeah. I mightâve fibbed a bit. My father would say that was true, though. He thinks I favor his looks, and heâs pretty full of himself, sometimes.â
Her pearly whites beamed up at me in a soft smile. âAh, a Casanova for a father. That mustâve been interesting.â She started fumbling with the radio, landing on an eighties rock station. Thanks to my dadâs love for the music, I knew all the songs.
âNah, he goes on dates, but itâs more because heâs bored. My dad is still in love with my mother all these years later. She passed away when I was young.
