Chapter Six

~ Max~

“Well, good morning, sleepy head,” I chirped at a very grumpy River.

Her hair was up in a messy bun, and she wore some sort of cartoon pajama pants with an ugly Christmas sweater. Making her the most beautiful woman in the world. Although, her scowl was meant to keep everyone away.

“You’re too fucking happy for this inglorious hour. Where’s that coffee you promised me?” she asked, closing the door behind her. She patted her back pocket, confirming her keycard was there.

“In the car.” I pointed towards where I’d parked. “I figured you’d need more than one cup, so I made you one at home. You can have another at Ella’s.”

Her lips arched to one side as she debated if she wanted anything to do with me. “Fine, you’ve seduced me into your car. For not being my type, you sure as hell have gotten me to do more than any other guy has.”

Jealousy pushed up from my soul. I didn’t want to think of her with other men or that I didn’t fit whatever was her type. I ached to be the only man she ever thought of for the rest of her days.

As we got to the car, I couldn’t help myself. I grabbed her hips, catching her off guard, and lifted her onto the hood of my car. My arms circled to her back as I stepped between her legs. Then I kissed her. A hungry and desperate kiss essential for me to calm down. River had a past. That didn’t mean shit to me. I did, too, but moving forward, it’d be just us.

When we came up for air, my lips turned up into a smile as I looked down at my handy work. River’s lips were swollen, her eyes were a little dazed, and her hands gripped my shirt. She wanted me just as much as I wanted her. She might not admit it out loud…yet, but I had a chance.

“Who needs caffeine when you got a sexy man to wake you up?” she joked once we got into the car and I handed her the insulated cup of coffee.

“I’ve been upgraded to sexy? Man, I’m doing better than I thought.” I turned on the car then drove off to the restaurant.

She rolled her eyes at me. “I’m sure plenty of women call you sexy. Didn’t you say you were the most eligible bachelor?”

“Oh, that. Yeah. I might’ve fibbed a bit. My father would say that was true, though. He thinks I favor his looks, and he’s pretty full of himself, sometimes.”

Her pearly whites beamed up at me in a soft smile. “Ah, a Casanova for a father. That must’ve been interesting.” She started fumbling with the radio, landing on an eighties rock station. Thanks to my dad’s love for the music, I knew all the songs.

“Nah, he goes on dates, but it’s more because he’s bored. My dad is still in love with my mother all these years later. She passed away when I was young.
