Chapter 7

Changes

The next few days were quiet, Charles and George rode down to farm #7 and visited with Bentley and Cleo Miller.

“How are things going?” Charles asked.

“I couldn’t be happier,” Bentley answered, “The farmland is much better than the land on the other farm.”

“I may need some help to get the oats and the corn harvested,” Bentley said.

“All you need to do is go to the distillery and ask for Tyson, he is my General Manager, tell him what you need and he will take care of it,” Charles answered.

“I couldn’t believe it when I saw those huge wagons show up being pulled by those Clydesdales,” Bentley said, “They got everything that we owned in one trip.”

“Is the house adequate for you and your family,” Charles asked.

Tyson invited Charles and George in and Charles looked around.

The house was obviously too small for a family of 6, and it disturbed Charles to see the small dining area where they had to eat, and a tiny kitchen.

The house was cluttered with too much stuff for the size of the home.

“Show me to the bedrooms,” Charles said.

“There’s only one bedroom,” Tyson answered, “The kids are sleeping on blankets on the floor.

“This isn’t large enough for your family,” Charles said, “You need a larger home.”

They walked outside and looked around. “I think this would be a good spot for a new home,” Charles said as he pointed, “And after the new home is built we’ll tear down this old house,” he added.

“I’ll take care of it,” Charles said as he turned and shook hands with Bentley, “I’ll make it a top priority.”

“Thank you,” Bentley said as he watched Charles and George walk away.

Charles and George rode into town. Charles knew that Cappy was over his head with jobs that he had created, and he needed someone that could start on the Miller’s house right away.

Charles had seen a sign on a building a number of times, “Keys Construction,” so he stopped and walked in.

“I need to speak to the owner,” Charles said as he addressed a young lady sitting at the front desk.

“I’m sorry,” she answered, “Mr. Keys is out of town until next week.”

Charles and George walked out and looked around. “Let’s take the train to Petersfield, and talk to Cappy,” Charles said to George.

Charles and George traveled to Petersfield by train, and dismounted.

This time Charles and George had taken their horses and mounted in Petersfield and rode to the Petersfield Construction Company.

Cappy welcomed Charles into his office and Charles explained about the urgency to get a home built for the Miller family.

“I don’t have enough men,” Cappy explained, “I’m running ads in the newspaper for laborers, and very few are willing to travel to Winchester for work.”

“I need to get the Miller’s a home built as soon as possible,” Charles said, “With a family of 6, one bedroom house is not bearable, what do you suggest?”

“Have you considered Caleb Keys?” Cappy asked, “He was in today talking to me, and he is about to go out of business from lack of work.
