Chapter 6

A New Son

Storm Warrior left Swimming Otter and walked through camp towards the schoolhouse. As he approached, he could hear laughter inside. He opened the door and walked in to see Judith holding her baby wrapped in a white cloth to her chest.

She was sitting up with pillows behind her. “Storm Warrior,” she said with a smile, “We have a son!”

Storm Warrior walked close and looked down at the baby’s face and kissed it on the head and then kissed Judith.

“Thank you Judith,” Storm Warrior said as he looked into her eyes, “You have honored me with a son. I must go pray now so I know what his name shall be.”

He turned and walked out and slowly walked up hill and prayed.

“Thank you for my son,” Storm Warrior said as he prayed, “And I thank you for watching over Judith and protecting her. I ask what the future holds for my son,” Storm Warrior said as he prayed, “And I ask what name he will be forever remembered as.”

Storm Warrior meditated and waited with his head bowed, and his eyes closed as many visions flashed through his mind.

Visions of battles to come flashed through his mind, white men in different colored uniforms charging each other with men falling all around. And then he had visions of cities, cattle, horses, and many children running and playing. Then there were visions of rivers, forest fires, animals running, and suddenly a large explosion ended his visions.

Storm Warrior was concerned; while he had seen many visions he couldn’t decipher their meaning. It appeared to him that his son would one day be in a great battle, take a job in the city, raise a family, and end up in the forest with the animals. But what was the big explosion? Or was the explosion a sign that the vision was over?

Based on what his vision told him what should his son be called? “Please help me,” Storm Warrior begged as he lifted his head skyward and closed his eyes. “I want a name that all will remember.”

He closed his eyes as his mind drifted, and suddenly it came to him. He stood, thanked Buddha and walked back to camp.

When Storm Warrior arrived at camp, the council was already in progress. He walked in, stood next to Gray Wolf and Gray Horse and waited.

Storm Warrior listened and waited until Red Bear asked if there was anything else that anyone had to say.

“I do,” Storm Warrior said as he stepped forward. “Judith has given birth to a son; I have named him White Bear.”

“Congratulations,” Red Bear said as everyone cheered and congratulated him.

“Very well,” Red Bear said with a smile, “Let it be known from now until the end of time that the son of Storm Warrior and Judith will be known as White Bear.”

After the council Storm Warrior walked outside and collected his sword and knife.

“How did you come up with the name White Bear?” Gray Wolf asked when he joined him outside.

“It
