rom a mile away high on a hill sat White Crow, the ten year old Pawnee captured by Storm Warrior earlier on Lookout Mountain and released. He had watched as the battle unfolded from under the hanging brows of a large fir tree. He had been ordered to hold the ponies along with four other young braves, and when Crying Wolf charged up the hill the other boys wanted to join the battle and left White Crow to watch the ponies, and galloped away to join in on the attack.

Later, White Crow saw the two thousand Sioux coming around the mountain on the northern trail, and there was nothing he could do but watch.

After the battle, began he decided to withdraw deeper into the woods and watch. If the battle went badly, he didn’t want to be seen by the Sioux. He tried to herd the ponies ahead, but they scattered, he managed to hold the ropes on the two with supplies and rode deeper into the forest.

White Crow rode his pony uphill to get away from the main trail; he dismounted and tied the ponies in a secluded location, and climbed to the top of the hill on foot, and watched the battle.

Then he watched as the Sioux drug the bodies of the dead across the grassy clearing to a deep ravine and tossed their bodies over the side.

Quietly he crept down the hill and remained hidden as he waited for Crying Wolf to pass by. After a short while, he heard movement, and watched, and then he saw him coming. He didn’t see anyone following, so he called out to Crying Wolf. White Crow stepped out from behind a large juniper, and motioned for Crying Wolf to come.

“Come,” White Crow said, “I have ponies and supplies hidden up on the trail.”

Crying Wolf followed him up the trail to the spot where he had the ponies hidden.

Quickly Crying Wolf searched through the packs on the ponies and found a spare set of leathers. He quickly dressed as White Crow silently waited.

Crying Wolf grabbed the old rifle from White Crow’s hands and examined it.

“When it grows darker,” Crying Wolf said, “We will slip into camp and kill Storm Warrior.”

“No,” White Crow said, “There are too many Sioux; we must go while we can escape.”

“No,” Crying Wolf said as he glared into
