Chapter 11

Visitors Arrive

A bugle sounded the alert of riders approaching. A small crowd of men collected around a fire pit at the cabins holding rifles. Several men came to the gate of the fort and as the men approached and they stopped their horses at the gate.

“Who are you?” Sergeant Black asked.

“We’re U.S. Deputy Marshal’s,” one of the men answered. “I need to see your commanding officer.”

“What do you need to see him about?” Sergeant Black asked.

“That, Sergeant,” the tall, menacing looking man answered, “Is none of your business.”

Captain Blanchard walked through the gate and said, “Stand down Sergeant.”

“What can I do for you gentlemen?” Captain Blanchard asked.

“We’re U.S. Deputy Marshals from Denver, and we need to speak with your commanding officer,” one of the men said.

“Of course,” Captain Blanchard answered, “Come this way.”

“Sergeant,” the Captain said, “Take their horses to the stable and see to it they are fed and watered.

The two U.S. Deputy Marshals followed Captain Blanchard to the stairs and climbed to enter Lt. Colonel Hawks’ office.

“Sir,” Captain Blanchard announced, “These men are U.S. Deputy Marshals out of Denver. They’ve asked to speak to you.”

The U.S. Deputy Marshals removed their coats and their U.S. Deputy Marshal badges were made visible.

“Of course gentlemen, have a seat,” Lt. Colonel Hawks said.

“Captain,” Lt. Colonel Hawks said, “Join us, please.”

All four sat, and the U.S. Marshals introduced themselves. “I am U.S. Deputy Marshal Huntley Porter and this is U.S. Deputy Marshal Earl Jefferson. Folks call me Hunt, and you can just call him Earl,” Hunt said.

“I am Lt. Colonel Hawks, and this is Captain Blanchard,” Lt. Colonel Hawks said, “What brings you this far north Hunt?”

“We were sent to investigate the disappearance of the two scouts hired by the government, do you have any idea what could have happened to them,” Hunt asked.

“I wished I knew the answer to that one,” Lt. Colonel Hawks said. “They left for a scouting mission one day and we’ve never seen them after that day. And when they returned I was going to have them arrested. We got word that they have been involved in criminal activity involving some settlers. They were a surly bunch, and I can’t believe the government hired them.”

“Yesterday morning Earl and I met a Blackfoot by the name of Bull. Do you know him?” Hunt asked.

“No, I don’t,” Lt. Colonel Hawks answered.

“He speaks English,” Hunt said, “But he didn’t seem to be a real friendly sort.”

“Bull claims,” Hunt continued, “That last year these two scouts came to visit their camp and during the visit they were rude towards the Blackfoot.

“Bull also said that the two scouts were asking about a white man with green eyes that were believed to have traveled this way,” Hunt said.

“Bull said when they told the men they didn’t know anything about a white man with green eyes the scouts became angry,” Hunt added.

“Then some warriors with rifles surrounded them and made them leave. Bull says that’s the last time he ever saw them,” Hunt said.

“It sounds like those two,” Lt.
