Chapter 14

MANY BEARS RETURNS

After leaving the fort, Many Bears, Gray Horse, Storm Warrior, and Swimming Otter joined the others and camped for the night. Many Bears told Storm Warrior that the idea of having a white school teacher in Sioux Valley was not a good idea.

“When it comes before the council,” Storm Warrior said, “I will state my reasons and why I think it would be a good idea. It would not be a white school. It would be a Sioux school with a white teacher that has had much education in universities. The Sioux need to learn the white man’s ways to survive.”

“Did you notice how Swimming Otter was lost during the talks? He is smart, he is a great warrior, but he couldn’t even carry on a conversation with the whites. To the whites he is just an ignorant Indian,” Storm Warrior explained.

“You and Gray Horse have earned the white’s respect. You understand the white man’s words and will not be taken advantage of. Braves Swimming Otter’s age will one day be leading our tribe. I want them not only to be the mightiest warriors in battle, but to be the mightiest when dealing with the whites. They have much to learn,” Storm Warrior added.

“The wise ones will hear your words, Storm Warrior,” Many Bears said, “But they will not be easy to convince. Many are stuck to the old ways; it has carried us through many generations.”

“Yes,” Storm Warrior said, “But even you must admit that things are not the same now as they were when you were young. And when our young grow old many more changes will come.”

“We must sleep,” Many Bears said, “We must be on the trail when the sun comes up. I do not trust the whites. We will talk of this in council.”

The next morning when the sun came up the war party was several miles away headed home. Scouts were out; the Sioux made better time by not having the women with them. After crossing the river, the Sioux headed north.

Scouts reported finding a dozen pony tracks several miles to the west and were headed north, and the tracks were fresh. Many Bears ordered more scouts sent out, and the war party turned northwest to investigate, and if it is the Blackfoot, they would be dealt with harshly.

Both Storm Warrior and Gray Horse hoped that it was the one called Roaring Bear and that they would meet. Smoke signals were sent to alert the wolves and within an hour more warriors were leaving the Sioux camp through the northern pass and would turn south hopefully to cut them off if they were still in the area.

A short time later, smoke signals told Many Bears that the wolves did not see any sign of the intruders. Being daylight with the plains covered with snow, they would be visible if they were headed towards Sioux valley.

“They have turned west or north,” Many Bears said. “No sign is found east or south.”

Many Bears continued to take charge with Gray Horse at his side.
