The house was ablaze with lights when I pulled into the drive. I parked in the front instead of my usual spot back by my apartment.

“Everly!” Darion’s voice came from around the house, and then he and my mom came into view, carrying a limp body by the legs and arms.

Dirt and rocks kicked up as I tore through the gravel and ran to help them.

“Oh my God! Is that Malakai? Why’s he unconscious?” I scanned Malakai’s energy. My hand flew to his neck to check his pulse. He’s so weak. “What happened?”

“Where were you?”

“I—”

Darion scowled. “Forget it! Just get the door!”

I leaped up the steps and threw the door open.

Darion and my mom shuffled in with Malakai and heaved him up onto the sofa.

“I’m glad you’re safe, honey.” My mom hugged me and rushed off into the kitchen.

I reached for Malakai’s dangling arm and squeezed his hand, searching his face for any response.

“Malakai!” I tapped his cheeks, hoping for an eye flutter, but he remained motionless. Beads of sweat covered his bronzed skin, which was turning paler by the second. I leaned over him and placed my hands on either side of his head. His energy was nearly undetectable, and his breathing shallow.

“What happened to him? He’s so cold and weak.”

“We found him like that outside,” Darion said as he rummaged through a basket on a bookshelf. “And the guards are all dead. It’s the Hunters. It has to be.” He slammed the basket back onto the shelf, causing the entire bookcase to rattle against the wall. “Damn it! Where are all the phone chargers?”

“Here, son.” My mom handed Darion a long white cord and then dashed back out of the living room.

“What? How could they all be dead?” I glanced at Malakai, willing him to hold on.

“We don’t know,” Darion said, shoving the end of the charger into the phone he held. “There were no signs of injuries. They were just all dead. All except Malakai. We found a dead owl on the ground beside Malakai’s body, so my guess is he was inhabiting the bird when they were attacked. Maybe that’s why he’s still alive.” He stared at the phone screen. “I’ve never seen anything like it.”

“Is that Molly’s phone?” I recognized her glittery pink phone case with I LOVE AN ALIEN printed on the back. Darion had gotten her the phone case as a joke, but Molly had loved it and snapped her phone into it immediately.

Darion nodded while clicking the power button. “I found it outside.” He turned it over for me to see. “The screen is smashed, but if I can get it to turn on, maybe I can find out why my fiancée left our bed in the middle of the night and went outside into the freezing cold alone.”

A turbulent wave of Darion’s emotions gripped me, and I found myself wanting to pound a hole in the wall or shred the skin off someone’s body. I forced back the nausea that came
