PART 2

CAMERON

CHAPTER 18

EVAPORATED INTO DARKNESS

Crazy fucking bitch.

I saw her red stilettos step out of the car, and I realized Manny had been tracking me. When I would empty my wallet later, I would find the tracking chip and burn it with a lighter. I figured she had slipped it in at some point in Mexico while I was sleeping off the booze and drugs. Now I knew she was the one trying to sneak onto Doc Lorne’s property—those were her men, not Victor’s men, as we’d assumed. As I’d assumed. At the time, we hadn’t bothered with it much, because no one was getting anywhere near that place. But now I realized I had opened up the gates and left Emmy exposed, all for my own selfish reasons: because I wanted her. I was a fucking moron.

I needed to get my head out of my ass and be more careful, especially now. Everything was different now.

Emmy and I were at the edge of the woods when Manny came out of the Mercedes. I had to step away from Emmy and didn’t have to look back to know that her heart broke as soon as I did. Once again, I was hurting her. But I had to show Manny that I didn’t care, that Emmy was just another woman; otherwise, Manny would order her men—there were two now, one to the right and one to the left—to shoot Emmy or worse.

When Emmy and I had first entered the woods, my gut had told me there was someone in there who didn’t belong—far away but definitely there. Yet I had forced the instinct out because I’d had bigger plans, and turning to see Emmy behind me—I’d dreamed of that moment. But I had been so nervous and distracted that I’d left my backpack by the bike, which probably had been our saving grace, because my wallet—and the tracking chip—were in there.

So Manny’s men had been searching the woods without an exact location. Had they seen anything? I didn’t think so—Emmy and I had been pretty well camouflaged—but I couldn’t be 100 percent sure. Plus, we hadn’t exactly been quiet.

Head out of ass from hereon.

Keeping my eyes on Manny and my ears on the guys in the shadows of the forest, I took my wallet out of the backpack and handed the bag to Emmy. “I’m going to go open the gate so Spider can drive through. After I take fifteen steps, I want you to come out. Keep your hood up and your head down, and quickly walk to the bus. Don’t run. Do not move from there until Spider comes. Understand? There is a gun at the bottom of the backpack. I’m telling you it’s there in case you need to use it. Do not pull it out unless you absolutely have to. Do you understand?” I left her because I had to. “Fifteen steps, Emmy. Count them in your head.”

Emmy moved on my ten steps, before I could stop at the padlock and before I could briefly glance back undetected to check on her security.
