âSo? What are you thinking for todayâs shoot, boss?â Tommy was sitting across from me in the café. âAnything come to you last night?â
Here it was. The moment of truth.
The moment when I had to admit that I truly had no idea what the next photoshoot was going to be. Despite my best efforts, I hadnât really been able to come up with much, and certainly nothing that Iâd be proud to show Tommy or the rest of the photography team.
âOh, you know, just the usual.â
âJust the usual?â Tommy leaned in, like he wanted to soak in my every word.
His eagerness to hear what I had to say was the straw that broke the camelâs back. âFine, Tommy! I donât have anything! Is that what you wanted to hear?â
âWhat? Why would I want to hear that?â Tommy frowned. âWeâre on the same team, boss. If things go wrong with this photoshoot, itâs going to come down on my head, too.â
âI know. Youâre right. Iâm sorry for taking my shit out on you.â I nodded toward the coffee station. âYou want me to get you something to drink? I could also get you a plate of whatever Bradleyâs cooking up for breakfast.â
âNo, thanks. The only thing I want cooked up is a plan for how to fix this.â
âRight, youâre right again.â I let out a heavy sigh. âMaybe we should look online for inspiration?â
âDid someone say inspiration?â Diego appeared seemingly out of nowhere and took a seat at the table next to me.
âYou got something to pitch, Diego? Because weâre all ears.â Tommy turned toward him.
But Diego quickly shook his head. âNo. Not a pitch for an idea. A pitch for how to get an idea.â
âIâm not sure I follow.â
âYeah, I donât think I follow, either, Diego,â I added. âWhat are you talking about right now?â
âPass the ball!â Diego shouted as he stood up from the table. âPass the ball! Chris! Andrew! Keith!â
The rest of the guys hurried down the hall, not stopping until they were standing in front of our table.
âPass the ball? Who needs us to pass the ball?â
âLeo, our fearless leader. And Tommy, our captain who will go down with his ship.â Diego pointed to both of us, as if the other guys had no idea who we were. âThey desperately need our help to come up with an idea for the next photoshoot.â
âI think youâre making it sound more dire than it isââ I started.
âIf we donât come up with something, theyâll lose their livelihoods!â Diego interrupted. âTheyâll lose their homes! Their loved ones will all abandon them for being failures!â
âYeah, okay, thatâs a bit dramaticââ I stopped myself, mid-sentence, realizing that pushing back on this was going to be a lost cause. âBut I do love the energy. Still donât know what passing a ball is going to do for us, though.â
âItâs going to open up your mind.â Chris offered me two thumbs up before he hurried back down the hall. âIâm going to grab a ball! Iâll be right back!â
âTrust me.
