Chapter 19

I Don't Do Weird

Georges leaned back in his chair and rubbed his eyes. He had just spent most of the morning reading over the comments from Doctor Taylor on her discussion with Quillon about his dream about the Necro Box. The thickness of the folder did nothing to hide the gravity of what it contained. He would need to be very careful about how he proceeded.

There was a rap on his office door that caught Georges off guard. Normally, his assistant would announce all visitors. Georges closed the folder and shouted, “Come in!”

“Greetings, Ian,” said Yuri as he entered, a large smile resting below his shaded aviator glasses. “I hope you don’t mind that I let myself in. Your man was away from his desk, and I could not figure out how to ring you, so I knocked.”

Glad for the interruption, Georges stood and took a few steps toward the door, stopping at the closest padded chair. He patted it and said, “Have a seat, Yuri. We have a lot to discuss today.”

“Am I late?” he asked as he looked around. “Where are the others?”

“No, you're on time,” said Georges, shaking Yuri’s hand before heading back to his desk. He recovered two glasses from the cabinet and pulled a bottle from the desk drawer. He held it up for Yuri, who nodded. While he was pouring the drinks, he said, “Stephanus is handling the arrival of the other Regents.”

“I should have guessed,” said Yuri. “I bumped into Torry Wellington this morning. I haven’t seen him in person since the last formal regent meeting. What was that, eight years ago?”

“Twelve,” said Georges, as he returned to his desk. “Reggie Ashwind is at the airport and will be here soon.”

“Torry, Reggie, Jordan, you, and me,” said Yuri, counting each name on his fingers. “That makes five of thirteen. Anyone else coming?”

“Not sure. I did my best to remind them of the importance of their positions and the proximity of an uncontrolled creature, summoned from who knows where. I’m pretty sure that Markham and Tatsuya will show up. Not sure if that’s a good thing, since they are both supporters of Elliott. The three of them together, has always ended up in a rehash over leadership.”

“Well, you still got my vote,” said Yuri, accepting the drink Georges handed him. Looking around, Yuri said, “Something’s different about your office.” Yuri pointed to the half columns in each of the corners, each with a large, dark chunk of stone on them. “Those are new. Are they Black Tourmaline Logs?”

“Yes,” said Georges, with a bit of pride.

“I don’t think I have seen specimens that large before,” said Yuri.

“I got them on-line, from a site called Natural Collective. My pride is the large Kyanite crystal cluster above the door.”

“Very nice. I don’t remember you having that strong an interest in that area of our work.”

“I had lunch the other day with Mike and Mary Whitcomb from our Metaphysical department. They suggested those,” Georges paused and pulled a yellow stone from his pocket, “and citrine.
