Chapter Six

Noah hadn’t done many things in his life that scared him. Not too many, but coming out, contacting Men Wanted, admitting he loved Arlen, and accepting the ring were right up there. Yet, the scariest thing had to be before him.

He had to contact his mother. He should tell her in person, but he should be telling his brother, too. If only the thought didn’t petrify him. He dialed Ryne’s number first. If his brother didn’t answer, then he’d call his mother. A terrible stall tactic, but he had nothing else.

Ryne answered at the fourth ring. “Noah.”

“Hi.”

“How are you? Where are you?”

“At Arlen’s. I’m working, why?”

“Mom is panicking for one. She said she’s tried to call you fifteen times,” Ryne said.

He checked his call log. One missed call―not from his mother. “Okay.” She could exaggerate like a champ. “I’m okay.”

“Thank God. She was worried. What were you doing? You usually answer right away.”

He shored up his courage. “I came out. I’m gay.”

Ryne didn’t say anything.

His heart dropped. “Ryne?”

“Good for you,” Ryne said, his voice flat.

“You’re upset.”

“No.”

“You’re shocked?”

“I’m a little shocked, but I’m proud and sort of relieved. I’m so happy for you, too. I’m jealous because you’re being honest, which is something I’m not ready to do in most areas of my life. But I’m relieved because I knew you had it in you,” Ryne said. “You’re telling Mom, right?”

“I am, but I’m scared.” His brother was relieved and proud? Hot damn. He could be honest with Ryne and that pleased him.

“She’ll flip out, but it’ll be okay. You’ve got me behind you. I can’t wait until you find your Prince Charming.”

“I found him.” Oh, fuck. He was really doing this.

“You did? You don’t mess around. Who?”

“Arlen.” He held his breath and waited for Ryne’s response. Would he flip out or still not be surprised?

“Took you long enough.”

“Ryne?” He didn’t understand.

His brother laughed. “I could see you had a thing for him. It was so obvious and I told Amelia you should be with Arlen.”

“So you’re not shocked?”

“Nope. I’m encouraging you,” Ryne said. “And I’ll back you up to Mom. Tell her. She’ll be angry at first, but she’ll come around. Trust me and tell her.”

“I will once I get myself sorted out.”

“You just woke up after sex, didn’t you?”

“No… maybe.”

“Horn dog. Good for you. At least one of us is getting laid,” Ryne said. “Shit. I need to go. Amelia is in a mood and the kids are sick. They picked up a bug at church camp and Amelia doesn’t want to deal with them. Keep me in the loop and congrats.”

“Thank you and good luck. I hope they feel better. All three are sick?”

“Nik’s got it coming out one end, Mac has it out the other, and Charlie is extra sleepy. It’s not terrible, but Amelia isn’t feeling motherly today,” Ryne said. “I should go. Love you.”

“Give the kids my love and I’m sorry. Thanks and see you later.” He hung up and couldn’t wipe the grin from his face, despite worrying about his niece and nephews being sick.
