Chapter Seventeen

Cheyenne would have talked to Mischief about the issue, man to stallion, but man to gelding didn’t work. Mayhem had experience in such matters, but from the female side of things. Cheyenne was looking for guidance from another male.

Once he had both horses in their stalls, he called Clint and tucked the phone between his ear and shoulder as he fetched a hay flake for Mayhem. Ladies first.

“I shouldn’t answer this.” Background noise from the Buffalo in full swing meant this conversation with Clint would have to be short and to the point.

“I’m in trouble, bro.”

“I could tell that when I saw you two this afternoon. You’re hooked on her.”

“I know, but it’s more than that. I want her more than I want to breathe.”

“Could see that, too. Tomorrow night at Mom’s should be fun. Hold on a sec.” The sound of happy people was muffled as Clint spoke to someone, probably a member of the staff.

Cheyenne fetched a hay flake for Mischief. As he dropped it into the hay net, muffled sounds from his phone stopped and Clint came on.

“Okay, I’m back. So you’re in trouble because you’re ass-over-teakettle for little Kendall Abbott.”

“Right! For Kendall Abbott. I’ve been avoiding her for years. Now I can’t get enough. What’s up with that?”

“I have a theory.”

“Let’s hear it. I’m a desperate man.”

“Am I right that you’re her first?”

“Yes, sir. But if you think she’s shy and retiring, she’s not the least bit—”

“I wasn’t thinking that. Not with the way she bid on you — I mean, me — at the auction.”

“Are you sure your sexy dance didn’t flip some switch in her brain? Because she’s—”

“It’s not me, bro. It’s you she’s after, has been for years. You’re her dream man. We all knew that.”

“Okay, okay. That explains why she’s infatuated with me. It doesn’t explain why I’m bat-shit crazy about her.”

“It’s the lure of the exotic, buddy. You haven’t been with a first-timer since… what, high school?”

“Yep. And we were both clueless.”

“But you’re not anymore. You’re the expert and she’s the novice. What guy wouldn’t get turned on by that setup?”

“I hadn’t looked at it that way. Makes sense, though. She’s damned good for my ego.”

“Just stay alert if she starts talking marriage. You don’t want your ego tricking you into something that’s not right for you.”

“We’ve already been over that.”

“You have?”

“I asked her point-blank if she thought this would end up with me proposing because I had no such intentions. She said that wasn’t even on her radar.”

“Surprising. I would have sworn that was her goal. But maybe now that she knows sex is fun, she may have a hankering to find out what brand of entertainment others can offer.”

Cheyenne’s jaw clenched. “Yep. And she should.”

“You don’t sound thrilled about the prospect.”

“I just don’t want her to get hurt. You know as well as I do that guys can be—”

“And she needs to learn that, the same way we’ve had to learn that not every woman means what she says.
