EDEN

“So, tell me all about it!” Eve pulled a chair out next to me at the table, scooted close, and placed her chin on her hands, eagerly awaiting details of my date with Adam.

“It was nice.”

Her mouth fell open, eyes rolled back in her head, and she mocked a loud snore. “Nice is boring. I want the dirt. So spill.”

“We had dinner. Then he came back to the house, and he kissed me. After the kiss, we spent the evening curled up on the couch watching movies. Adam fell asleep during the third movie and started snoring lightly. It sounded like a purring kitten. It was adorable.” He had been lying against me at the time. My legs fell asleep before I did, which made things a bit uncomfortable, but having his body against mine felt so good, the pain of not being able to move became barely noticeable in comparison. “I snapped a picture.” Opening my phone, I showed her a photo of Adam asleep with his head against my chest. “I know it’s a little stalker-ish, but I couldn’t help it.”

“Sneaky, but I would have done the same thing. Nothing else happened after the kiss?

“Nope. We’re taking it slow for now. This morning we made plans for a second date.” Adam had woken up in my arms, glanced up at me through hooded eyes, and grinned. He said he slept better than he had in years. After a good-morning kiss, he said he couldn’t wait to see me again. Since he had to work the next few nights, I would have to wait almost a week for our date. Six days might as well have been a year, with how anxious I was to see him again.

Sniffing the air, Eve’s forehead creased. “Are you wearing a new cologne?”

“It’s Adam’s cologne. From where he slept on me. I didn’t stop to grab a shower this morning because I would have been late meeting you. I like the scent though.” Pulling my shirt up to my nose, I took a whiff, closed my eyes, and smiled as Adam’s face appeared in my mind.

“You’ve got it bad. I haven’t seen you this in love since....” I could tell she wanted to say Earl, but neither of us had mentioned his name in years. “I like seeing you happy. It warms my heart, little brother. You’ve been the best stand-in dad for Jackie. With everything you’ve done to make sure I’m taken care of, I’ve been hoping you’d meet someone to put a smile on your face like the one you have today.

After spending the day with Eve, I went back home to my apartment. Lying on the couch, I flipped on the television to find one of the movies we’d watched the night before. It was called Mystic Pizza, one of Julia Roberts’s first movies. I could recite this one by heart, I’d seen it so many times. Now it had new memories for me as I closed my eyes and imagined Adam being there with me.
