3 Once the first wash is dry, experiment by overlaying further washes. To gain depth of tone, try leaving parts of the first wash exposed and painting around them.

Building form

In this version of the same bucket sketch, multiple washes of dilute ink have been used to render form and tonal value.

Chapter 3

Making pictures

Seeing and looking

We see things all the time, but seeing is not the same as really looking. As you develop as an artist you will subconsciously begin to see the world differently, feeling an immediate emotional reaction when a potential subject is encountered. This is because artists will visualize the scene not as it actually is, but as it will appear on a two-dimensional surface. In order to do this you need to analyze your first reaction, looking hard at the subject to make sense of the interlocking shapes, lights and darks, textures, and so on, and working out how best to get it down on paper. Walk around your subject and if you can, touch it to feel the forms and surface textures. Squinting with one eye closed will help you work out tonal values, because this reduces the impact of color. Decide what the nearest element is and where would be a good place for your picture to start and end.
