Most of the Macintosh software team members were between twenty and thirty years old, and with few family obligations to distract us, we were used to working long hours. . . . By the fall of 1983, it wasn’t unusual to find most of the software team in their cubicles on any given evening, week day or not, still tapping away at their keyboards at 11 p.m. or even later.7

Jobs was one of them in age and marital status. He orchestrated his rebels with a cause like a maestro, and together the Mac team felt they were on a holy mission.

But times change, and the brash twenty-eight-year-old was now forty-two years old. No longer just the operational head of the Mac division, Jobs was saddled with significant responsibilities: He was a dual CEO (Apple in Cupertino and Pixar in Point Richmond), and he was wearing himself thin, like too little butter scraped over too much toast.
