Chapter Twenty-Two

Wickham

Lizzie was right. I really was an idiot. Just days after promising to do better and step up like a supportive boyfriend should, I did the exact opposite. Not only did I suffer from it, but Mason clearly did too. He looked as exhausted as I felt, and as comfortable as I was curled up on top of him on the couch, there was a perfectly good bed literally in the next room. But instead of stretching out there, we crashed together and slept damn near the whole night through in a messy tangle of limbs.

It was easy to ignore all the gnawing doubts and worries sprawled over his body, and I reveled in the feeling for who knows how long. Dark became light as night became day, illuminating the room in a soft glow as the perpetual noise of the city grew even louder outside the windows, but all I could concentrate on was the gentle rise and fall of Mason’s chest under my head. The insidious shift in the pattern of his breathing crept up on me, and I startled as a laugh shook me where I lay.

“You’re thinking so loud, babe.” His voice was all gravel and smoke, rumbling around in the cage of his ribs.

“Jesus,” I pushed myself upright on my elbows and squinted at his face to bring him into focus. “Sneaky. How did you sleep?”

“Mmm. Good. I think you cut off the circulation to my legs though.” He stretched and settled again, looking deliciously sleep rumpled and smiling softly. “You?”

His fingertips along the contour of my face sent a shiver down my spine. “Better than I have in days, my love.”

Reluctant as I was to move, I had to. Sleeping on the couch had been a terrible idea, and my joints protested the fact with every aching inch I moved. There were also a few other inches aching for a completely different reason. It had been entirely too long since Mason and I had done anything more than kiss and cuddle. As much as I didn't want to rush him or push him outside his comfort zone, my body hadn't quite gotten the memo.

We took turns in the bathroom, Mason laughing as he hobbled around waiting for the feeling to come back to his feet, before we landed on my bed in another heap of roaming hands and aimless kisses. Content to let sleeping dogs lie, we avoided the topics I knew we should be talking about in lieu of lazy lounging and meaningless murmured conversation. Eventually, the heat between us insidiously rose and conversation fell away as more urgent touches and lingering kisses replaced it. Before long, my body was frayed at the edges with need and want I couldn't ignore.

“Mase,” I gasped, rolling away to flop on my back before I did something reckless like tear his clothing off and climb his body like a damn tree. “Mason, tell me what you want?”

Silence stretched beyond the bounds of what would be considered awkward and my pulse rose for reasons other than arousal.
