Chapter Sixteen

Ethan

It had been strange, looking around at the apartment, which had been his home for so long, and seeing it completely empty. He had sold off his furniture, or given it away to friends. He had his clothes, an ancient computer, and that was pretty much it.

It was the end of an era, and it was impossible not to be a little bit sad about that. But what he was going into was far more exciting, it had to be said—a whole new phase of his life, and one that he was so ready for.

Where it would lead him, he didn’t know. He couldn’t let himself think about that, or he’d get too depressed. What he wanted from Jared was something that he suspected he could never get, which was actually sort of depressing. He had never much cared to be in a relationship before, but now that he wanted to, it was with someone that it probably would never happen with.

For now, he would take what he could get. He didn’t have any misgivings about his choice, either in taking the job or in moving in with Jared. Sure, maybe he would end up with his heart broken, but that was probably pretty much inevitable at this point. The time to stop this would have been before Ethan cared.

Way too late for that. So he would hold on for dear life and see where this went. He might as well get some fun out of it before it all ended.

Then Jared texted, and Ethan spent the next hour loading boxes into his own car, and Jared’s. That was all it took, one hour, to pack up everything that he owned. He dropped his keys into the landlord’s mailbox, and then it was all over. He officially lived at Jared’s house—God help him.

It was definitely strange to look at the pile of boxes in the room that was his now. It was a huge one and already furnished since it had been Jared’s guest room. He doubted that he would spend much time there, but it was his home, he supposed, officially.

Every night that he could, every night that Jared allowed him to, Ethan would be staying in Jared’s bed. But for appearances, he and Jared would have to have separate rooms. Not that Ethan cared about appearances, but he suspected that Jared did.

Not that they had talked about any of this. Ethan knew why he didn’t bring it up. He was too scared to hear what it was that Jared was going to say. He didn’t want to know what this meant to Jared because he wasn’t sure that he could bear it once he had.

It was a little strange, being in the house and not having Abby be there, too. Abby had been his main reason for coming over, but there could be no doubt now that Ethan was here just because he wanted to be around Jared.

They made dinner together, something that Ethan learned really quickly that he had a thing for.
