Chapter 22
The trap door shook and flung open, the rusted hinges screeching loudly. The sound was followed by a loud thump as the wooden door slapped into the cellar floor. Zee was ready, ignoring the loud bang, her sword falling, hacking into the furry skull of another foolish allevark.
Her opponent fell back into the tunnel. Their head gushed blood, split open by the blow, the wound burning with a dark blue flame. Like before, she slammed the trapdoor shut again.
It might seem unfair to kill like this, but if they were stupid enough to keep exposing their heads like that, she would keep killing them. Besides, they should know better after she either maimed or killed five of them while climbing up the ladder.
It was like a stabbing fish in a barrel. Or she supposed, like stabbing cats in a barrel. At least she told herself that. The reality was far worse. The Allevark were people, sapient just like humans. Even though they looked like cats they were not.
That was a dark thought that she pushed aside, forcing it to the back of her mind for later. No time to contemplate the morality of what she was doing. If she didn't kill them, they would certainly kill her. For now, she needed to hold the choke point, giving Allison and the crown prince the time they needed to escape. A familiar presence washed over her, a missing piece of her returning to her body, making her feel suddenly whole.
"Zee, where is the princess? We have to warn her, the prince is going to be assassinated by one of his guards," Dern said, startling her with his sudden outburst in her head.
"Oh, hey Dern, glad you made it back," Zee said, crouching low beside the trapdoor, her sword dripping rivulets of blood onto the wooden floor.
Just then, the door swung open, and another fuzzy head peeked up. She stabbed him in the right eye, kicking him off her blade to fall back down the hole, leaving a trail of blood and spiritual fire in the wound.
The dark blue fire glowed brightly, burning flesh and fur like some sick torch, lighting up the gathered soldiers below in the tunnel. Zee ducked to the side as an arrow whizzed past her head mere inches away, thudding loudly into the roof above her. Whew, that was a little too close for comfort..
"What are you doing? The prince is in danger," Dern said.
"I am keeping these nasty kitties from killing me. And no need to worry. The prince is wounded but should be fine. I am covering the retreat while Allison gets him to safety," Zee said, throwing the blood-smeared trap door shut again. An arrow thudded into the trapdoor just as she did so. Stupid archers and their damned arrows, she thought.
"Oh. Huh, I guess I should have come back sooner," Dern replied.
"Don't feel bad. I doubt your warning would have helped in either case," Zee said.
"I feel so much better now, thank you," Dern said dryly.
