Chapter 20

A soft knock on wood disturbed Alister’s meditation, bringing him out of his frantic attempts to maintain his calm. He scrambled from the floor, leaping to his feet from his seated position. Alister had to force himself not to run to the door, not wanting to break anything. Excitement filled him. Based on the incredibly refined and dense aura signature, Julian had finally returned.

A week, it had been over a week since his father in law had gone looking for his youngest child, Zee. Without bothering to calm his frantic expression, Alister opened the door with enough strength to tear it violently from its hinges. The door clattered to the tiled floor with a crunch of broken wood and torn hinges. Oh crap. Cylia was going to have his hide when she got home.

He pushed that thought from his mind, vowing to replace the door before she returned. Alister turned back to his father-in-law. Julian wore soft silk robes of white with black stitching, his sword sheathed at his side, oozing malice. Julian, usually unflappable, was, for lack of a better word, crestfallen. His shoulders were slumped, his eyes on the shattered door, his aura rippling slightly.

"Give me the news," Alister stammer, his heart thudding like a drum. Julian took a deep breath, his usually confident brown eyes flicking up to meet Alister's.

"The news is not as good as I would like. I have done every test I can think of around the crater. My readings of the Null realm are tremulous at best. The energy in the area is still rippling chaotically," Julian said.

"What does that mean?" Alister asked, a lump in his throat.

"Well, judging by the unstable fabric of reality and the remnants of dense energy from the defense medallion, something went horribly wrong. The world river in the area is still going crazy. I think the chaotic energy of the blood moon eclipse had a bad reaction with the medallion I gave Zee," Julian said, biting his lip in an all too familiar gesture. Julian took a deep calming breath before he soldiered on. "From what I can tell, the medallion activated. Although I'm not sure if she was alive when it did," Julian said.

Alister asked the question he had been dreading, "Can you find her?"

"That is a firm maybe. Today was the first time all week that I got a faint signal from the medallion. I would have been overjoyed, but the signal is far too disparate. The signal should be more focused than it is. It should be a solid signal. All I am getting is a whisper of a connection," Julian said, running a callused hand through his hair, frustration writ across his face.

"That sounds like a good thing? At least you finally got a signal," Alister said hopefully.

Julian grimaced, shaking his head slowly. "It is actually more troubling than it sounds. Each of the medallions I created has a resonance that ripples quietly through the Null realm. They broadcast at a wavelength that the Farahar cannot detect," Julian said, taking in a weary breath.
