UNFAITHFUL

November 15th

“Dammit!”

I angle my head in Penny’s direction. She’s talking to Josephine, the makeup artist. “My phone is gone.”

“That’s not good,” Josephine says.

“There are so many important personal contacts on it. Scarlett is going to fire me. I’m done. After three years of hell, this is going to be what ends my career. She’ll ruin me.”

“It has to be around here somewhere,” Josephine says. “When did you have it last?”

“Yesterday. I thought I left it in her trailer, but I checked this morning and it’s nowhere to be seen.” Penny wrings the roots of her frizzy hair. My hair would be frizzy too if I treated it the way she does. Another side effect of working for Scarlett.

“I’ll ask around. They don’t just let anyone in Scarlett’s trailer. Take a breath. We’ll find it.” She smiles kindly at her.

I almost butt in and tell Penny she’s better off. I almost tell her Scarlett is screwing her boyfriend and she should tell Scarlett to go to hell, but I don’t know Penny well enough. Imogen should tell her. Though her constant lover’s quarrel eyes hint that she might already know there’s trouble in paradise, she doesn’t need me rubbing it in.
