Chapter 6
“Hey, Counselor. How’s the presentation coming?”
“Great, thanks,” Suzannah answered without looking up from her laptop. “Find anything in that box of letters your friend sent over to you?”
“Not yet.”
She gave him a quick sympathetic smile, then quickly lowered her eyes back to the computer screen, wondering how she was ever going to make it through the day. And even if she did, there was her girls’ night out with Noelle to worry about.
An endless parade of nightmares had left her completely drained. First Justin had been mutilated. Then he had been the mutilator, wielding a black machine gun, an evil grin on his face. Then he had been dead again. By morning, she truly wasn’t sure which was worse—evil Justin or dead Justin. But either way, she had found herself dreading another day with him.
Fortunately a messenger had knocked on the front door while Suzannah was still in bed, and by the time she had dressed and joined her houseguest, he was eagerly sorting through a box of documents. He explained that Charlie Parrish’s mother had found some letters in a basement cupboard and had turned them over to the FBI, where one of Justin’s buddies had discreetly made these copies.
Suzannah had seized upon the opportunity to suggest that they work separately for a change, citing her need to make some progress on her Hawaiian speech. She had expected Justin to protest, but he had surprised her by agreeing almost too readily. She decided not to analyze the reaction, just to appreciate it, and while she chatted with him lightly from time to time, she remained as disengaged as possible.
The puppy wasn’t quite as easy to discourage, and after a while Suzannah just gave in to him, cuddling him on her lap as she made notes on her computer. It was amazing to her how much comfort his sloppy kisses and adoring stare could give her, and she warned herself not to get too attached. She still hadn’t decided whether to keep him and suspected he was better off without her anyway. Once the case was over, Justin and Murphy could and would disappear from her life and she’d get back on track. Noelle was right about that at least—neglecting the Twelve-Year Plan at this point, almost ten years into it, was foolish, especially considering she didn’t have a new plan to take its place.
Out of the corner of her eye she saw Justin wander into the kitchen, where he began making sandwiches. That was a good sign. She had made it through the morning at least. In fact, a glance at the clock showed her it was already one o’clock. She wondered if she dared take a nap. She definitely needed one after her sleepless night.
Murphy seemed to have the same idea, she noted with a smile as he began snoring loudly. Careful not to disturb him, she moved him onto the pillow in the box that had become his unofficial doghouse. “Nighty-night, Murf,” she whispered. Then she returned to her seat, rubbed her eyes and turned her attention back to the laptop screen.
