Hackett shot his arm out to block her advance. “Wait.” He stuck his head through the doorway. “Surrect?” A woman’s voice answered, but he dropped his arm. “Go on then.”

Orielle didn’t budge. “I wanted to see Grim.”

“I ain’t leaving. Surrect’s got some questions about your spells. I didn’t ask; power ain’t my business. Go on.”

She scowled, but when she crossed the threshold, she pasted on a smile and a pretense of willing help.

The dimness briefly blinded her, but her sight quickly adjusted.

Surrect stood at the hearth. His staff leaned against the stones. At the table before the shuttered window was Lillias. Neither mentor returned Orielle’s smile.

If they intended to be difficult, she would—. No, she needed their support for her mission and for Grim.

She only hoped Lillias had heard of the battle from Surrect.

The two mentors barely acknowledged her entry. Lillias frowned at her fellow. “Surrect, Fortis should be here. We need him.”

The healer shook his head, his unbound hair shifting along his shoulders and down his back. A sole braid, from behind his left ear, held colored beads with strips of leather woven in. He leaned on the healer’s staff, the knotty wood casting off a cedary scent although the growth from the gnarled knot at the top was leafy rather than a sticky frond. “Fortis will attend the hearing. Time enough then. Or do you intend to influence his decision before we even meet? He is a young mentor.”

“And a friend of Grim,” the woman pointed out. “A childhood friend.”

“He will not be influenced by that when he decides.”

“So you say now. What will you say if his decision goes against what you want?”

Surrect shrugged. “We use the weapons at hand.”

Orielle couldn’t decipher that comment. How would Lillias’ influence of Fortis ahead of the hearing be a weapon? Unless the woman expected him to decide for the alliance, which she must oppose. But why would Lillias oppose an alliance with the Enclave?

Hackett’s brief judgment of Commander Ferro rang in her ears. She remembered the man from the crowd, who had asked if the wizards would once again enslave the Rhoghieri?

Orielle had thought the mission would be simple. She’d thought the weeks-long journey would be the difficulty. She hadn’t anticipated the foul creatures of the Wilding or the Kyrgy. Now she must contend with an undocumented past between wizard and Rho?

She broke into their continued conversation with its obscure comments. “Why do you wish to see me before the hearing? Do you wish to hear again about the wraiths?”

The older woman hooked her hands in her belt. “I haven’t heard about last night.”

“I told you, Lillias,” Surrect snapped. “I called for you, wizard. We intend to break your other seals. We will examine this dwelling before I cleanse it.”

“Good. I did only the minimum last night. I sealed all the windows and doors. Nor did I do the grave ceremony for Zairantze, although nothing remains of her body. The sorcery sapped all of her. You may have intended to seal this dwelling against wraiths, but the grave seal is also needed.
