Chapter 12
Henry hadnât been lying when he told Theo he enjoyed being in the library with him. A place so warm and inviting. More so than when Sir Roderick was in charge. That may have sounded strange, given Theoâs particular way of doing things, but it was true.
Everything had its place. Everything was in order. Everything ran like a perfectly wound clock, all the gears working together to keep the exact time.
The entire place glowed and came to life around Theo. Theo, though probably not aware of it, also glowed and came to life the second he stepped inside. Truly a sight to behold. Beautiful. Not perfect, but the closest to perfection Henry had ever seen.
While Theo took care of making the proper arrangements to leave his precious library in the careful hands of someone he trusted, Henry sat in one of the circular reading room chairs and watched. He couldnât quite hear what Theo was saying, but the young lady he was speaking with hung on to his every word. Made Henry smile.
This was important to Theo, and Henry was glad he had people to hand over his trust to. Although it would only be for a few days, Theo had to be nervous about leaving. He had hustled across the library several times already, sometimes carrying a stack of books or papers, other times empty-handed. Theo made rushing look both elegant and effortless. He made his preparations and arrangements with meticulous precision, handed out instructions with care and patience, and rearranged his normal schedule with ease. If there was any trouble at all, Henry certainly would be fooled.
Every now and then, Theo paused what he was doing and looked over to where Henry was sitting. Almost as if making sure he hadnât left. Whenever this happened, they shared a smile, and Theo sometimes indicated that heâd only be a few more minutes.
Heâd done so three times already and he still hadnât finished. Not that Henry minded. To be honest, heâd sit and watch Theo work for hours. There was something so calming, so peaceful about it. Seeing him where he flourished. In a place where the world belonged to him. Here, in the library, Henry was sure that Theo had the ability to move mountains.
By the time they left the library to head for the herbarium, the rain had let up enough that Theoâs umbrella-incantation was no longer necessary. One look at the sky told them this wouldnât last. The sky rumbled in agreement.
The herbarium was as warm as Henry remembered. Warm and brightly lit. The soft scents of dirt and plants permeated through the air. He smiled as soon as he and Theo stepped through the front doors.
This had been one of his favorite places when heâd attended the College. Heâd spent days at a time between here and the greenhouse. In fact, Henryâd taken many botany and herbology and horticulture classes. If itâd been possible, heâd have only taken classes that involved dirt and plants in some way.
