Chapter Fourteen
Wyatt knew he’d put Greer on the spot. He couldn’t help but smile inwardly. It was small of him, but she was just so much fun to tease.
As he’d expected, she rose to the occasion. “Certainly, it’s okay with me.”
She shifted her gaze to him then. “As long as you don’t have business to take care of at home. I realize you’re in the process of moving into your home.”
It was a gentle nudge out the door. Wyatt had to admire her technique. Perhaps he should cut her a break and leave her alone with her—
“Uncle Clay said you live in his neighborhood. Which means you live by Aunt Greer.”
It was a statement rather than a question, but the fact that the child’s gaze focused directly on him seemed to demand an answer. “I live right across the street from your aunt. In fact, if I stand and look out my front window, I can see in hers. Not that I’d look.”
Brynn dissolved into giggles. “I like you.”
Greer’s expression softened, and her lips curved. As hard-ass as the woman could be, she loved her family. Something inside Wyatt’s heart lurched.
“I’ll get the games.” Brynn popped up. Before she left the kitchen, she flashed him a sunny smile. “I’m happy you’re staying.”
“If you want me to leave,” Wyatt spoke softly once he was sure Brynn was out of earshot, “I’ll make up an excuse and go.”
He saw Greer was tempted, but a second later, she shook her head.
“Brynn is more worried about her mom than she’s letting us see. I’m concerned, too.” Greer’s lips unexpectedly quirked upward. “Having you here is a distraction.”
It was an odd choice of words. He thought about asking if he was a distraction for Brynn, or for her.
She’d been gracious.
He would be no less.
Brynn returned seconds later with an armful of games. She dropped them on the coffee table in the living room.
“Some of these are ones the six- to twelve-year-old kids will play during the Junior Board Game Tournament,” Greer informed him before turning to her niece. “Which one do you want to play first?”
By nine o’clock, they’d had their fill of board games. Though Wyatt had to admit that you could learn a lot about a person from playing a game with them.
He’d discovered Brynn was willing to risk it all for a chance to win. Greer, on the other hand, was careful and methodical in her decisions. He, well, he fell somewhere between the two.
“Isn’t this about the time you go to bed?” Greer asked her niece when the last game was boxed up and put away.
The look that skittered across Brynn’s face showed her indecision. Be honest and risk being sent to bed, or lie and feel guilty?
Deception wasn’t part of the girl’s nature. Wyatt had observed that firsthand when he’d inaccurately counted spaces and she’d corrected him, giving him a better board position.
“Yes, but this is a special night.” Brynn reached out and placed a hand on her aunt’s arm. “I won’t be able to sleep until I know Mom and the baby are okay.
