Chapter Six
It had not been an easy night. A thoroughly over-excited Violet, buoyed by the unexpected visit from the marquess, had been difficult to control for the rest of the day. This carried into the night, where her sleep was disturbed by nightmares. Her cries had woken Elizabeth in her room along the hall, but Nanny, who Elizabeth suspected was more than a little deaf, had slept right through them.
She had spent hours comforting a sobbing Violet, who kept dreaming about her dead mother. No sooner had she got her back to sleep than she'd wake again. In the end, Elizabeth had slept curled around Violet, who had seemed comforted by her presence.
Elizabeth yawned, and covered her mouth with her hand. The marquess, standing next to her in front of the building as they waited for the carriage to be brought around, looked at her.
"Tired, Miss Huntley?" he asked.
"Violet had a difficult night," she explained. "Lots of nightmares. I spent most of my night trying to get her to sleep."
"Where was Nanny Jackson?" asked the marquess, frowning. "She always used to—I mean, that's her job."
The unspoken words hung in the air between them. Nanny Jackson had been the one to scare his nightmares away, back when he was the lonely child in the nursery.
"Nanny Jackson is quite advanced in years, my lord," Elizabeth said diplomatically. "I thought it best that she get her sleep."
He looked surprised for a moment, then rueful.
"I suppose she is," he said. "It's odd. You never think of those people from your childhood as aging, do you? They're timeless. Or, at least, they should be."
"Nanny Jackson does a good job, my lord," Elizabeth said hurriedly. "But as Violet's English tends to disappear when she shows any strong emotion, she finds it hard to understand what Violet needs, or, indeed, why she is so emotional."
"I don't think French was ever a requirement for a nursery maid in Briarstone before," the marquess sighed. "Lord, what I've put that woman through. Remind me to find something nice for her when we're in York, Miss Huntley."
"Yes, my lord," Elizabeth said, surprised. Not many employers would treat their staff so kindly.
The carriage came around then, quite the nicest one that Elizabeth had ever seen. It was painted in a deep blue color, accented with gold, and carried the Hamilton coat of arms on the doors. Four matching brown horses, all tacked up in neat brown leather, pulled it. A driver sat up at the front, and two footmen stood on the platform at the rear. One of them jumped down to open the door and pull down the steps, and the marquess offered his hand to Elizabeth to help her into the carriage.
She accepted it, and tried not to think about how, for all the times she'd daydreamed about him spanking her, this was the first time that their bodies had touched. She wished that neither of them had worn gloves.
The interior of the carriage was as finely decorated as the outside, with the seats upholstered in blue velvet that matched the exterior color.
