A trestle table covered with a grey military blanket stood in the centre, with wooden benches along two sides. The pilots slept on camp stretchers, under green mosquito nets. Hurricane lamps were used at first for light, but later electricity was supplied by the squadron electricians. Later again, crushed white coral was spread on the ground, and, in Hugh’s words, the tent became ‘homely and comfortable.’

The squadron camp was only some 200 metres from a beach overhung with palms. A pool with sandy bottom was close in and people walked over coral to reach it, but they soon realised that every cut and scratch became infected. Some of these developed into ugly tropical ulcers.
