Johnny allowed himself the luxury of dinner. He thought long and hard about where to eat. Eventually, he chose the Sherwood Diner over the border in Nassau County. This had been where his mother had toiled all those years ago to help pay for his education. No one who worked in this classically styled restaurant would remember her, with many of the servers appearing to have not even been born 23 years ago. He needed to go there anyway.
After his experience with the lost Garden of Eden, he wanted to see and touch something that had not changed. The booths and freestanding tables appeared to be the same ones that had graced the Kentile floor that remained after all these years. Whoever owned the establishment now saw no reason to upgrade the facilities in light of the lower standard of customer who now frequented the location. Gone were the snobbish matrons who had looked down their noses at the hard-working waitress from the Queens side of the border. Gone was the wafting cigarette smoke that had inundated the place while the rich spent hours discussing how well they were doing in their lives. If their situation were to be judged by the minimal tips that were left to the hard-working staff, they obviously were not doing as well as they boasted. Johnny enjoyed the ultimate misfortune of this place that had probably contributed to his motherâs early demise. He contemplated the fact that his actions had also been responsible for her failing health. He finished his sausage and eggs and exited the diner more depressed than ever. Time to focus. In memory of his mother, he added a 30% tip to the cost of the meal and left. He drove back to Rietâs house to continue his surveillance.
He knew the exact house where Gio and Riet had had their many hidden meetings. He only hoped that Maria had gotten the journal and its message to Riet in time. As he stared at this home, he wondered how it was that she still lived in her familyâs original location. What was her story? No, there was no time for a snowbird investigator to look into this one. If he had not heard Vanâs throwaway comment about his mother living in the same house for 30 years, he wouldnât even have known that this was the same place. Nevertheless, here he was skulking a half a block away in his beat up old car with Florida plates. Would this attract the attention of neighbors, or worse, the police? He hoped that both groups were just too busy with important matters to notice a misplaced white face in the neighborhood.
