Chapter 10
1970 San Diego
Dana hurried to close down the library at exactly 6:30 p.m. All of the book shelves looked orderly and clean. The register had been properly prepared for the next day and the old, oak counter was shining. Ani was spending the weekend with a new boyfriend in a “free love” camp somewhere out in the forest. Dana thought Ani was looking forward to the “free hunting” more than the “free love” Dana had turned down Ani’s invitation; that kind of stuff really wasn’t her thing. She had heard the stories of the wild things that went on in those places and she had no intention of getting caught up in that mess. However, Dana was sure the mind expanding drugs made the hippies easy pickings. All she had to do was wait until the drug started to wear off (so it wouldn’t damage her blood) and dive right in. Ani had given her a few stacks of money for the weekend and now Dana was off to the department store.
Dana loved shopping so much that as she sorted through the jean rack she felt dizzy from seeing all the wonderful and different styles. Bell bottomed jeans in purple were her favorite and if she found some with rhinestones lining the cuffs she thought she might explode. When she found a pair of lavender ones with rhinestones around the bottom she quietly jumped up and down and hugged them to her chest. These were perfect for going to the Rolling Stones concert Friday night with David. David was one of the grooviest things she had ever seen. He had a short and close, black afro. His skin was the color of butterscotch with eyes the color of coffee with cream. He spoke in a low raspy tone that made all the women turn in his direction whenever he spoke. All the men wanted to be him and all the girls wanted to be with him. She was surprised she didn’t pass out when he asked her to go to the concert with him. Dana never felt the need to date after Bryson died but Ani convinced her.
Before she walked over to the counter a man placed his icy cold hand on her arm and softly leaned into her ear. “Now, please do not make a scene. I just want to talk to you.”
Dana turned around slowly and came face to face with piercing blue eyes. She felt an instant anger boil up inside of her. Making a scene might be the only thing that would save her life; why else would Donovan be appearing to her now, other than to kill her? She had not seen him in decades and all of a sudden he thought it would be OK to just appear in front of her? Something must have been horribly wrong.
“What do you want?” She asked, taking a deep breath but continuing to look straight ahead.
“I just want to say how sorry I was about the death of your husband.
