Chapter 8

Karsen stood in a boat in the middle of the largest pond in the area, absolutely terrified.

He wasn't cut out for this hero business in the first place, though he desperately wished he could be. He wanted to be fearless, to stand here ready and confident, but even if that was who he yearned to become, it wasn’t him.

Only two options. Take the risk, or back down. He could give up, take the slow route, let Simon's mother and friends be taken away by the Jasonites to do whatever it was they wanted to do to their prisoners.

Or he could do something about it.

He had one day before they'd be moving her. One day to become strong enough.

He’d have thought it impossible before, but having seen Sunny and the various forms the Soul of Fire could take, his confidence had grown.

With a sword, shield, and companion... he wasn't sure he was ready to try the infusion until he had the full set, but even that might be worth it. Perhaps his system would compensate, prevent him from losing himself? It probably would, but he wasn't ready to risk it.

He'd seen the power of the Infused. They could do amazing things, even if they were mindless and insane.

"You'll help too, right Sunny?"

His fiery fish swam in excited circles, fully in agreement.

"Don't worry, I'm not going to let any of them stay in the wrong hands.” Talking aloud helped, the sound of his voice echoing a strength he projected despite not feeling it. Hearing the confidence spoken aloud made it easier, let him build momentum. “Bad enough to make massively destructive weapons, but to power them with the torn-up pieces of a demigod's soul? That’s wrong on a whole other level. I’m not going to stand for it. We'll get your siblings back together.”

Only four of which would be violent, murder-happy monsters.

"I wonder... can you do the absorbing for me?" he asked Sunny. "If you can be used as an extension of my mapping ability..."

The fish swam over to a small rock and picked it up. It carried it over to Karsen with great deliberation, clearly struggling with the weighty thing.

Karsen accepted the pebble with confusion. "What's this supposed to--"

[ADD ITEM: SMALL ROCK TO INVENTORY?]

"Ah. I need to be touching a thing to interact with it?"

Sunny bobbed in agreement.

“Good to know.”

They stood for a time

"I suppose the next question is if I'm going to stand on this boat putting it off forever, or get on with things. Right, Sunny?"

He ran a hand over the glossy-hot skin of his companion, feeling his mind settle the tiniest bit. His heart still slammed in his chest, panic tightening his gut every time he even thought of activating his scan ability, but he knew it was necessary.

Necessary.

"I chose this," he reminded himself aloud.

So why was it so hard to follow through? Why was it easier to do what someone else commanded than to take action for himself?

That did it. Years of bitterness and self-hatred bubbled beneath the surface.
