Chapter Thirteen
Attack
TWO HOURS LATER, still no car. I cursed under my breath. I didnât even want to see a real zombie, let alone fight one. The bacteria factor alone freaked me. And the teeth factor. Most importantly, I couldnât exorcize a zombie. Their animated flesh was like a parasite, not a possessed being. If the movies were right. If they were wrong, I would know what to do. That would be a first.
âWhy canât they ever be on time,â I mumbled.
Tabby sighed. âBecause they donât take this seriously. They probably donât even believe that Ezekiel exists. I would imagine they stopped and ate, stuff like that.â
âPart of me is tempted to let the zombies get them.â And film it and put it online, but I didnât say that aloud.
Isaac meowed under the table. I reached down and he trotted over. I scratched him behind the ears for a minute. âSee? He agrees with me.â
My phone rang, interrupting the petting session.
âHello?â I said into the cell.
âMr. Holiday?â the voice asked.
âYes.â
âI hear you are harboring something unusual.â
If this was how this was going to go, I was not having it. I had better shit to do with my time. âIâm not harboring anything. It lives up the road with its mother.â
The guy on the phone choked.
Now maybe the idiot would listen and get something done. âHow do you want to do this?â
âI supposed we would come see for ourselves, then address the mother from there.â
Pompous ass. Heâd see what was up there alright. He wasnât even smart enough to ask himself if all this was a joke. Why should I bother? âIf you donât get a move on, youâre going to have more to worry about than a devil baby.â
âWhat are you talking about, Mr. Holiday?â
It wouldnât be kind of me not to warn them. If they ran into trouble and someone got hurt, it would not be on my shoulders. âThere are zombies in these hills.â
He laughed so hard I had to pull the phone away from my ear.
That was it. âYou know what? Fuck you. I was trying to help.â
I hung up. The whole mess had been hard enough without his bullshit. They could get eaten for all I cared. Screw them.
âWhat the hell, Jimmy?â Tabby asked.
âAsshole laughed at me. I donât have to take that from anyone.â I leaned back in the chair and tried to calm down.
The phone rang again. I picked it up and stared at the screen. It was them. âIâm not answering it.â
I threw my phone on the table. Tabby grabbed it.
âHello,â she said. âNo, you donât want to speak to him right now. Yes, he was perfectly serious. Ever hear of voudou? Uh-huh.â
I was a bit curious what the asshole was saying, but the sadistic part of me wanted to sit on Woodyâs porch with a beer and watch the show. I was so glad I was no longer a priest. It meant that I didnât have to be nice.
Tabby rolled her eyes. âNo, I donât think we can help with that.
