The condoms fell onto her lap as her sister-in-law stood over the bed. While at her brother’s home Soraya and her sister Ameerah had their own bedrooms. Soraya looked up from the book she was trying to study with and frowned. Her heart was racing, and she was incredibly surprised by what Pia had given her.

“Look you can tell your brother that you and Nudie are just friends until you’re blue in the face, but I know better. You and that sexy ass boy are more than that. I also know you’re supposed to be staying over Aaleyah’s for a sleepover but just in case that turns into something else, stay safe. I would love for you to wait. In a perfect world I know that you would but in case you feel like you absolutely can’t then use them. I know you might see me and your brother even Kaseema and think it’s doable but it’s hard. That’s what people don’t tell you. Kids slowed us the fuck down. And yes, we go hard for them but that small part of me, I think the last selfish part I have left in my body sometimes wonder on how life would be if the kids weren’t here? If Ahmad would have stayed on the right track and I would have attended school for dance. He could be in the NBA living out his dreams while I toured around the world with Beyonce,” Soraya gave Pia the eye and she giggled. “Okay maybe not Beyonce but hell maybe I could be. I don’t want you having those doubts because unless you are financially stable when you have kids you will be living and working to provide for them. It’s no longer about you and what you want. Enjoy your youth and all that it brings and don’t forget to pray Soraya. God is the only way you can have a true sense of happiness. No boy or good grades will give you that,” Pia said, and Soraya could feel her heartbeat increase.

“Huh?” she asked quietly.

Pia gave her a knowing smile.

“Again, my father was just like your dad. It’s hard being born to men that are in a sense larger than life. They expect a lot and I remember how it was feeling that pressure to be so great. I was always trying to live up to his expectations of me and when I fell short there was hell to pay. I’m always here if you want to talk. I can relate to a lot of the things you are going through. Anyway, happy Valentine’s day and like I said if you do find yourself somehow in Nudie’s presence try to think with your head and not your heart,” she sealed her words with a kiss before leaving out of the room.

Now it was hours later and like Pia predicted she found herself in Nudie’s presence. Yes, they’d been back to texting regularly, but something was off. The peace she felt when she was near him was gone along with the connection they had.
