I forgot to mention, in my last letter, about the recording to be made at the Berlin Jazz Festival, Oct 29–31.

As you probably know the 1st night is going to be a tenor workshop: 6 tenor players with Ben, Don Byas, Booker Irvin, Brew Moore, Sonny Rollins + Very saxily yours.

And this part I know you’ll dig, it’s going to be recorded and royalties are non-existent at Prestige, or so I’ve been told! Why don’t you write me and let me know if it is O.K. and/or what you think.

My new horn is just beginning to sound for me—each time, I hear a little more, a little more. It looks like “shiny stockings”!

It was a nice letter you wrote to me this summer and I want you to know Alfred that the health is like “honey dew melon.” Happy days are here again!!!

Also, I’m anxious to hear the reaction to “One Flight Up.” Has it been reviewed yet? Probably a * critic.

So, let me know as soon as—about the business at hand.

The new horn he mentions in the letter, the one he refers to as looking like “shiny stockings,” was a new Selmer Mark VI that he got in Paris. The story about that saxophone, and the one it replaced, has been told and retold so often that it is impossible to separate fact from fiction. Dexter’s friend Leonard (Skip) Malone wrote about the new horn in his book More Than You Know: Dexter Gordon in Copenhagen:
