Chapter 28: Molly

Five Years Before

She had no idea how long she’d been asleep but something, a noise, woke Molly from her television-induced slumber. The lights were still on, as was the television. She blinked away her momentary confusion and saw that Pretty Woman with Richard Gere was playing. It was gone eleven. The empty Pot Noodle pot and fork had fallen on the floor. She picked them up and placed them on the coffee table. At least it was late enough to go to bed now. She stretched and yawned and it was only then she realised with a start that Robbie had come downstairs without his jacket.

‘Oh, you made me jump,’ she said.

‘All right, Molly?’

‘Aren’t you with… where’s Petra?’

He sat down next to her on the sofa, pushing Bella away, too close for comfort as far as Molly was concerned. ‘She’s still upstairs. She’s asleep. Well, she went to bed anyway, said she wasn’t feeling too good.’ His annoyance was palpable, it shimmered off him like a haze. He sighed dramatically. His evening had obviously not gone well. She wouldn’t mind so much if only he moved away an inch or two. She was pressed against the armrest and had nowhere else to go.

‘What are you watching?’ he asked.

She told him, told him it starred Gere and Julia Roberts, that it was one of her mum’s favourites, and ignored him when he said it looked ‘shit’. But he stayed where he was, on the settee, uncomfortably close to her, his arms folded, his eyes fixed on the television. Subtly, she lifted her weight and pulled her skirt down, conscious suddenly, that it was rather short. She sat with her knees touching and saw, as if seeing them for the first time, how chubby they looked, how blotchy they appeared.

‘Are you still going out with Petra?’ she asked, unable to bear the silence.

He shrugged. ‘Probably not. Not now.’

‘Oh.’ She wished Petra would come down from her bedroom. ‘I’m sorry.’

He laughed. ‘Don’t be.’ He turned and looked at her, his arms unfolding. ‘Wasn’t that bothered about her anyway.’ He sat up on the settee, no longer slouching. His eyes bore into hers, his pupils dilating. ‘But I like you, Molly.’

‘Me?’ she said, aware of the quiver in her voice.

‘There’s only one Molly around here.’ He was shifting his weight now, leaning more towards her. She tried to edge back, but, again, the armrest gave her nowhere to go. ‘Listen, I was never that bothered about Petra but you’re different to her: nicer, prettier for one thing. Bigger boobs too.’

OK, it was time to move away now but as she tried to hoist herself up, he fell on her, pinning her down with his weight. ‘Robbie, no. Stop, please.’

A cold hand crept around her waist, pulling her shirt free from her skirt, his clammy touch on her bare skin. ‘Come on, Molly. You’re sixteen now, you told me. It’s all legal and that.’ His mouth found hers, his lips moist, fat, trying to press down on hers.
