By morning, the girls were gone, and I was laid out on the sofa flipping channels aimlessly. My brain fried on memories. I cannot imagine a recovery greater than this. This is where I am at—like it, love it, hate it—I hurt. Bad.

I am not sure what time it was when Dom returned. I noticed Diamond rush upstairs unseen by Deacon, who was for the lack of better words standing guard dog over me.

“What the hell is wrong with you?” Dom says, grabbing my foot. “We got work to do Boston.”

Deacon rapidly steps forward from the kitchen. It says a lot to me about his character as he knows I am not doing well and he’s just so happened to see it for himself.

Go me.

“He’s stuck in an endless loop of the past,” Deacon says, standing in front of me with a protective stance like a rabid fighting pitbull. “He needs the needle skipped to the next song or to break the record and get a new one.”

His insight offers an accurate interpretation of precisely where I am. When others make me nervous, Deacon soothes and calms with a reassurance that everything will be okay. I expect this from Dom. Not so much Deacon. So, to say I am flabbergasted is the understatement of the decade.

I know my elders take care of me, but a guy my own age—why?

Dom rubs my ankle as he takes charge. “Do you need an extended session, Sal?”

“No, Sir,” I grump off, not wanting to be anyone’s bitch right now. I find comfort in the push of the button and the change of the screen. My attention is beyond deficit, and I really just want to be left alone.

Click. Click. Click.

Sports predictions. Sappy movie. Bad porn. Crime show with gore. Docudrama on World War I. Girls in athletic shirts having sex.

Click. Click. Click.

Beastily bathing mommas. The news and weather report. Horror with a skeletal killer. Barely legal litigations. Good cop, bad cop. Mafia movie.

Click. Click. Click.

“Lucas Salvatore Raniero, stop,” Dom warns as I glower in his direction. “Deacon, keep an eye on him. I have a few phone calls to attend to.”

“I never had any other plans,” he says, standing his ground. He isn’t budging, and I find the whole ordeal rather curious. His watchdog is just short of growling as Dom departs for upstairs.

Plopping in the chair beside me, he says, “You okay?”

“I will be.”

“You know you can talk to me if you need to,” he replies with a tender tone.

I shift slightly and lean up on my elbow to look at him. “Who the hell was that guy?”

“That was this guy,” he assures, leaning back and lighting a smoke. “Just because I walk a bit of an enlightened path doesn’t mean I won’t get blood under my fingernails…particularly for someone I care about.”

Uncertain how to handle his bromance bonding, I chirp off, “You are only saying that because you saw me squirt.
