Pimpin Maxwell maneuvered the big Cadillac through the city as his mind carried through the city of his mind. He and JoJo approached the young boy, all the while thinking they’d have to give chase. But he and his old knees were ever so grateful when the boy stood tall and fearless in their presence.

He noticed the kid’s bile congealing in a puddle at his feet, but that was a normal reaction for a person who’d witnessed something as savage as Messiah just had. He commended the kid for that being his only reaction.

“I know yuh, boy. Ain’t cha Cedric and Eddie Ruth’s boy?” JoJo asked.

Messiah’s young eyes bounced back and forth between the two men in an attempt to gauge their intent. Maxwell noticed the boy revered JoJo a lot more than he did him and JoJo’s next words told the tale.

“Yuh come over to the house for my daughter, Justice,” he said as he studied Messiah, while Pimpin Maxwell laughed.

That’s why the boy seems so tense. JoJo done scared the boy shitless over his baby girl, he thought.

Yet, Pimpin’s second thought stole the mirth from the situation. His eyes roved over the kid, he’d heard that he and his moms had fell on hard times since Ced had been killed, but his heart went out to the lil souljah as he digested his appearance. The dirty clothes and busted XJ900’s on his feet told the truth of how fucked up things had become.

Pimpin Maxwell had a thing for Black back in the day. And even though she was his boy’s girl and he and Ced had ran short con a time or two back in the day, lust was a stronger force than loyalty. Especially when the two people sharing it were able to close their eyes and pretend that if the secrets could be kept, it justified giving in to what shoulda never been considered.

On a cold night in November, he and Ruth had sinned and vowed to keep that secret to protect everyone involved. Ruth became distant and Pimpin Maxwell respected that. With that in mind, Pimpin Maxwell came back to the present.

He vowed to himself that he’d make it his business to create better days for the boy and his moms.

“So, you’re Ced’s boy, huh?” he asked, trying to strike up a conversation, yet Messiah didn’t respond.

He didn’t know where they were headed but at that moment, as long as it was as far away from the fuck boy Sauvé as possible, it was good with him. He kept his eyes on the passing scenery where it seemed to be fiends and dope pushers on every street corner.

The lights were beginning to come on. Messiah knew his T-Jones would be worried but at that moment, he couldn’t face her. He kept reflecting on how broken she’d looked as she sold her soul for that weak ass nigga Sauvé .

“You don’t talk much, do you?” Pimpin Maxwell asked, being persistent. “Look, boy. You’re rollin’ wit’ Pimpin Maxwell.
