Anne wasn't used to indecisiveness, at least not in herself. She saw it every day in others and pitied them for it. She despised it in herself.

Anne's philosophy of life was encapsulated in the phrase, "more is lost through indecision than the wrong decision."

However, this time, at this moment, Anne was flummoxed. She couldn't move. Even deciding to step first with her right or left foot became a move on the order of scaling Mt. Everest or some other enormous peak.

Just do it. Just do something, Anne thought. This is so absurd.

At least I'm not drooling or dribbling spit down my chin like the others, Anne reassured herself. She wondered what the Reading Room bakers might have been putting in the coffee or the muffins.

Damn. Anne couldn't move. It took a tremendous effort to turn her head from one side to another. Was it because of some kind of PTSD resulting from the city hall calamity? Could be.

Anne was no rocket scientist. She was an entrepreneur, a business owner, and civic leader and now, wife to the mayor of St. Isidore.

She didn't have a clue about what was happening inside the Reading Room or what had paralyzed her.

Then it happened. Anne saw Adam.

Only briefly. Just a glimpse. Perhaps. Anne was in the self-help section of the Reading Room Adam named "Wishful Thinking."

Not "Self-Help."

"Wishful Thinking."

That was his sense of humor, Anne smiled to herself.

No, stop it! Never the past tense. Only the present and future tense when thinking of Adam.

I will not be defeated.

"That's a good attitude," said a female voice from the Reading Room's cafe.

With great effort, Anne twisted her head to the side, moved her eyeballs more, and saw a woman, about her age sitting alone at a table.

"Keep moving. Don't stop," the woman said. "Remember what you always tell your students, 'It's a great life if you don't weaken.'"

True. Anne blinked and saw herself saying that to her business class at St. Isidore Community College. She floated over the students—a mix of old, young, and middle-aged—all paying rapt attention to this woman who had made a mini-fortune with the first environmentally friendly laundry detergent.

They wanted to be as successful as she'd been.

"I seem a little full of myself, don't you think," Anne said to the woman who floated beside her over the class.

"Oh, maybe. But don't you have a right to at least a small degree of arrogance?" the woman said with a nudge, a smile, and a wink.

Anne laughed. "Yeah, well, I have always thought so," she winked back.

Following the briefest flash of light, Anne found herself, and her new friend, back in the Reading Room. This time, the ladies were sitting together at a table in the back of the cafe.

Fresh coffee and warm muffins were set out before them. Anne didn't have time to wonder how the food and drink wound up there, but she didn't really care either.

Now, her curiosity was more than aroused, Why was this woman, out of everyone spitting and dripping in this bookstore, the one talking to Anne.
