Chapter Seven

The Gift

Maria

After dinner Mary settled me down to the talk she had promised. She said promptly that she had made out her will—leaving all of Los Luceros to me. I was kind of weak in the stomach listening to her—the luck of it! And then she was crying, saying she “hoped I wouldn’t mind,” she didn’t want it “to be a millstone around my neck,” that I could sell it . . . or rent it or do anything I wished—only that I must be free with it.

—Maria Chabot to Georgia O’Keeffe

Los Luceros, October 13, 1944

I must also say that after my three times out with Mary this week I hold my head for you for what you will pay for Los Luceros—if you have to live in the house with her. —I rather think she has decided not to speak of you to me anymore—that we do not see eye to eye and of course she is right. That I have used you and she is now going to have you live as a lady as you should. She is making fine plans for you.
