"Bring her home for Christmas! We look forward to meeting your friend," Jen's parents had said to her over the phone, the suggestion sounding more like an instruction than a warm invite.

She had missed Thanksgiving because of some work she had to finish over the weekend, at which point her parents had practically threatened her to get another family if she didn't show up for Christmas.

When she had laughed over the phone, they had said, "We are not joking."

Though Jen knew they were fibbing, she didn't want to have to find out for real.

By the twentieth of December, she called Taylor and gave her heads up. "My remaining a bona fide member of my family depends on you going home with me for Christmas."

Taylor burst out laughing. "What?"

"I am serious, and they sounded just as serious, too. So, please, would you help me remain part of a family this Christmas?"

Taylor giggled. "You know I would go to Antarctica for you."

"Aww. That's so sweet. We should begin packing stuff, then!"

"Yes! I am sure it's going to be fun. I can hardly wait."

"I love Christmas, but I don't think I can hardly wait."

"You are a clown. When do we leave?"

"The morning before Christmas."

"Sounds good. Maybe you'll come help me pack, and I will come help you pack."

"Alright, I will do anything you want to. Thank you for helping me keep my place among my family."

Taylor laughed. "Please, stop saying that. It's kind of weird.

Jen chuckled. " My family can be kind of weird."

"We'll see," Taylor replied.
