Chapter six

Twenty seconds ago Leo wouldn’t have thought he could feel any crappier. He was wrong. Why hadn’t he kept his mouth shut? Francesco’s best friend’s speech made perfect sense now.

“Matteo, I—”

“It’s okay, Leo.” Matteo cut him off before Leo could utter the usual words of platitude and, he was ashamed to admit, he’d been going to. “Go to sleep.”

How the hell was he supposed to go to sleep after that? Leo kept silent for as long as he could, which was about ten minutes—an unfortunate trait inherited from his mother—then asked softly, “What happened?” Matteo’s sigh slid over Leo’s skin like a caress and Leo involuntarily shivered as Matteo’s hair brushed against his shoulder.

“We were attacked by a group of men on the way home from dinner with friends almost three years ago. There was no rhyme or reason to it, just drunk and looking for a fight. I took a couple of good kicks to the head so I don’t remember much. Except the sound as they hit him. And his screams. I remember his screams.” Matteo’s voice was completely emotionless. But then Leo surmised that that was probably the only way he could get through the telling of his story.

“Witnesses told the police he laid on top of me when I hit the ground, taking the most of the blows. If he hadn’t I’d be dead too. He saved my life. He was in a coma for four weeks, two days, three hours, swollen and broken, and I just sat there and watched him. Watched and waited for him to come back to me. And he did. We were alone in the room, the sun just rising and I remember a shaft of light shone through the window and across the bed when he opened his eyes.

“He looked at me for the longest moment with this little relieved half-smile on his face. I know now it was because he’d kept his promise. He’d protected me. Kept me safe. He’d been breathing on his own for a week, which the doctors said was a good sign, so when he opened his eyes… I could never explain the joy I felt at that moment. Everything was going to be okay. I had him back.

“But it wasn’t. I kissed him, told him how much I loved him and he touched my face. I’ll never forget how his hand felt against my skin. He was so warm; so alive… then he closed his eyes and sighed. A long heavy sigh, you know? With that half-smile still on his face… then he died.”

“Matt—”

“Please,” Matteo said, his breath catching on the word. “Please don’t say you’re sorry.”

“I wasn’t going to.” Leo linked his fingers with Matteo’s where they lay against his stomach. “What was his name?”

“Cesare.”

“What was he like?”

“Beautiful.” Matteo huffed out a laugh. “Opinionated, stubborn, annoying, obnox—”

“So you were a perfect match?”

“Very funny.” Matteo nudged Leo’s shoulder with his head. “He was also spontaneous, passionate, sensitive and loving. He had this way of always knowing the right thing to say to make it all better, you know?”

“Yeah.
