Chapter six
Twenty seconds ago Leo wouldnât have thought he could feel any crappier. He was wrong. Why hadnât he kept his mouth shut? Francescoâs best friendâs speech made perfect sense now.
âMatteo, Iââ
âItâs okay, Leo.â Matteo cut him off before Leo could utter the usual words of platitude and, he was ashamed to admit, heâd been going to. âGo to sleep.â
How the hell was he supposed to go to sleep after that? Leo kept silent for as long as he could, which was about ten minutesâan unfortunate trait inherited from his motherâthen asked softly, âWhat happened?â Matteoâs sigh slid over Leoâs skin like a caress and Leo involuntarily shivered as Matteoâs hair brushed against his shoulder.
âWe were attacked by a group of men on the way home from dinner with friends almost three years ago. There was no rhyme or reason to it, just drunk and looking for a fight. I took a couple of good kicks to the head so I donât remember much. Except the sound as they hit him. And his screams. I remember his screams.â Matteoâs voice was completely emotionless. But then Leo surmised that that was probably the only way he could get through the telling of his story.
âWitnesses told the police he laid on top of me when I hit the ground, taking the most of the blows. If he hadnât Iâd be dead too. He saved my life. He was in a coma for four weeks, two days, three hours, swollen and broken, and I just sat there and watched him. Watched and waited for him to come back to me. And he did. We were alone in the room, the sun just rising and I remember a shaft of light shone through the window and across the bed when he opened his eyes.
âHe looked at me for the longest moment with this little relieved half-smile on his face. I know now it was because heâd kept his promise. Heâd protected me. Kept me safe. Heâd been breathing on his own for a week, which the doctors said was a good sign, so when he opened his eyes⦠I could never explain the joy I felt at that moment. Everything was going to be okay. I had him back.
âBut it wasnât. I kissed him, told him how much I loved him and he touched my face. Iâll never forget how his hand felt against my skin. He was so warm; so alive⦠then he closed his eyes and sighed. A long heavy sigh, you know? With that half-smile still on his face⦠then he died.â
âMattââ
âPlease,â Matteo said, his breath catching on the word. âPlease donât say youâre sorry.â
âI wasnât going to.â Leo linked his fingers with Matteoâs where they lay against his stomach. âWhat was his name?â
âCesare.â
âWhat was he like?â
âBeautiful.â Matteo huffed out a laugh. âOpinionated, stubborn, annoying, obnoxââ
âSo you were a perfect match?â
âVery funny.â Matteo nudged Leoâs shoulder with his head. âHe was also spontaneous, passionate, sensitive and loving. He had this way of always knowing the right thing to say to make it all better, you know?â
âYeah.
