Wednesday 16th June

Mum sees no point in me moving five streets away, but honestly, I think it’s the best compromise. And I didn’t even think about still being close to Conall. Obviously. I was moving boxes, and Mum was trying to get the removal man to give a discount, when Eamonn came out.

‘Hello,’ I said.

He paused.

‘Here,’ I added, handing him a box. ‘You can help.’

He looked too confused to disagree or walk away.

‘Good boy,’ said Mum, patting him on the back, which I think just confused him more.

When all the boxes had been put away in the van, he just stood there.

‘Thank you,’ I said.

He shrugged.

Then he waited.

‘Do you want to come inside? Lemonade? Or do you like iced tea? Coffee? Or are you too young for that? When do kids start drinking caffeine? Although, you’re not really a kid any more . . .’

God, I could talk a lot of shit sometimes.

He shook his head.

Eventually, he spoke.

‘Can I . . .’ he began. ‘Can I come and see Mils some time?’

Mils. He had a nickname for her and honestly, in that moment, I could’ve hugged him.

‘Of course,’ I said.

He looked relieved. It was the second time I’d seen him smile.

‘I always wanted a little brother or sister,’ he added.

Before I could reply he walked away and back into his house.

Now I am finally in my own home. Though it doesn’t feel like mine yet.
