Twenty-Four
The following morning at exactly 9:30, Jennifer and I got into my car and pulled out of the driveway. Finally, I had my fiancée alone. I had a lot of questions, especially about our daughter.
Sofia had decided to stay home. She was never comfortable around crowds, and since neither Jennifer nor I could guarantee that there wouldn’t be a lot of people milling around at the courthouse, she decided to play it safe and stay home. We just had to promise her that once we got the license we would call her and that we would try to be home by noon.
Jennifer turned onto Moorpark Street and drove toward the freeway. Just as I was about to ask her about Sofia she jumped in and said, “I have something very important to tell you.”
“Okay,” I replied as I braced myself for some terrible news about my daughter.
“I can’t have children,” she remarked.
“What?” I asked, not quite sure I’d heard her correctly.
“I can’t have children,” she repeated as she gripped the steering wheel very tightly.
“Is that the reason the guys who were supposed to marry you all backed out? That was the big, bad thing they found out about you that had them running away?”
“Yes. I couldn’t really blame them. What newlywed couple doesn’t want to have children?”
“Yeah, I agree. What’s the use of getting married if the woman can’t have children?”
She looked at me as though all the blood had been drained from her body and asked, “Should I just turn around and go home?”
“What the hell have you been smokin’ this morning?” I asked. “I thank the good Lord in Heaven that those clowns who were supposed to marry you backed out. Their loss is my gain. Honestly, I have not even thought about children … the thought hasn’t crossed my mind once. Wow! Just think about all the money we are going to save not having to buy birth control devices, and I know how important that is to you.”
“Very funny!”
“I can’t even handle the one child I have,” I continued. “What in the world would make you think I wanted more?”
“She’s perfect, and don’t you ever forget that.”
“If you say so. After all, if anyone would know, it’s you, right, Ms. Perfect?”
“And what is that supposed to mean?” she asked as she stopped at a red light.
I reached over and ran my hand through her hair and said, “Despite your aversion to money, you are the most perfect individual I have ever met. I’ve told you that numerous times. Your beauty is undeniable, but it’s what is inside that makes you so special. In a city filled with pretenders, I have never once doubted your sincerity, caring, and compassion. In just a short time, you have been able to connect with my daughter in a way I have never been able to.”
“Don’t kid yourself, Joe. That child loves you more than is humanly possible. She might have a difficult time expressing herself, but never question her love.”
