Simon’s mild panic attack in the courtyard outside the laundry room was curtailed by an unexpected spectator.

“Simon,” Millie said, peering around a flapping sheet, “why are you sitting there with your head between your knees making sad noises?”

Simon straightened up and climbed to his feet. He felt a little dizzy, and held onto the wall of the castle just to be sure he kept his balance. “I, uh... Shouldn’t you be with a tutor or something right now?”

Millie glared at him as though he’d betrayed her, and melted away between the sheets again.

A moment later a man poked his head out the doorway. “Millie? Millie?” His narrow gaze landed on Simon. “You there, kitchen boy, have you seen Millie?”

Simon didn’t bother to correct the man. “No,” he lied. “Haven’t seen her.”

He ignored the way the sheets closest to him rippled and giggled.

The man huffed and vanished inside again. After a few seconds when it was clear he was really gone, Millie’s face reappeared. “Thanks. Oh, hello, Pie!” she said to a spot somewhere over Simon’s left ear.

Simon turned his head to find that Pie was hovering there, far enough away that Simon hadn’t even noticed him in his scramble to leave the tower. It was the last thing he needed to see, but at the same time it warmed his heart.

“How come he’s here with you? He normally sticks to Dave like glue,” Millie said.

Pie trilled and came closer, before landing on Simon’s forearm and rubbing his face against the fabric. “I think,” he said slowly, “that Pie might be jealous. Dave’s spent the morning trying to teach Bobo to fly.” At the mention of Bobo, Pie trilled and chirped indignantly and Simon hadn’t known a dragon could scowl, but Pie was doing just that, scowling like an old man whose chair by the fire has been occupied by some young upstart. “He’s definitely jealous of Bobo,” he amended.

“Is that why you’re sad?” Millie asked. “That Bobo’s going to fly soon? What’s so sad about that?”

“He’s an Eastern Green,” Simon said. “When they learn to fly they–”

He thought he saw a shadow moving between the gently fluttering sheets, but when he looked up expecting to see Millie’s tutor lurking nearby again, there was nobody there.

“They what?” Millie asked.

Simon blinked and shook his head. “Did you see something?” He stepped forward and pushed a sheet out of the way. “Is there someone else–”

“Simon,” Ser Rufas said, stepping around a billowing sheet. He was holding a knife in his hand and wearing a smile that was just as sharp and dangerous. “I don’t believe we finished our talk last night.”

Pie chittered frantically and swooped around Simon’s head. His translucent wings caught the sunlight, and made bright little rainbows. Ser Rufas watched with a gleam in his eye. “And look, it appears our little friend has decided to join us. How very convenient.”

Simon took a step back, and then another.

“Simon? What’s happening? Who’s that man?” Millie asked, hands on her hips.

“Millie!” Simon hissed, silently willing her to leave.
