ALFONSO II, “THE CHASTE”, KING OF OVIEDO, LEON AND GALICIA, DIED A.D. 842

He fought successfully against the Amirs Achacam I and Abderrahmán II and tried to form an alliance with Charlemagne and his son Louis, which was opposed by the turbulent nobles of the Asturias and of Galicia. He restored partially the Visigothic administration and founded towns and churches, amongst them Santiago de Compostela, the shrine of St. James, which soon became the most important centre of pilgrimage in Europe. The illumination reproduced belongs to the Libro de los Testamentos of Oviedo, which was probably compiled between 1126 and 1129 and is one of the most significant Spanish illuminated manuscripts of the Middle Ages. The King is represented praying, with his shield-bearer standing behind him.
