Eðna woke to a whisper. “Vakna, Finen.”
She climbed up out of sleep and turned to the voice — an amber honey voice, with the cadence of old, old language — telling her to wake up. Calling her an unknown compound word that meant something like “fine one.” The scent of wood and rosemary came next, and she opened her eyes. Brosa leaned over her, like the sun coming in to the sleepy dark of her bed. His hair fell forward and hid his scar, but could not obscure his sea-blue eyes, wide awake and twinkling.
With a quick stab of annoyance she pressed her lips together. She’d been here eleven long days, and he had called her Fine One far more than once. He was amused when she pushed away his assistance, but she didn’t need his help, at least with the simplest things, like smoothing out a blanket or eating a cracker.
“Fine,” she said, sitting and drawing her blanket up to cover her shift. “I’m not sure you use that word the way we do in the future.”
“Já?” He sat back on the edge of her bed, a ridiculous number of knives clanking on his belt. “How do you use it?”
“Well, it does mean okay, as in not needing help.” She sounded pricklier than she’d intended. “But also, someone who is fine is…” She searched for old words. “Gorgeous. Beautiful and…sexually attractive.”
He smiled and closed those ocean eyes for a moment, savoring some thought or remembering someone. His wife?
At least he would stop using the word on Eðna, now.
“Get up,” he said, and he patted the bed beside her. “It’s early. I thought we would find some birds.”
“Find birds?”
Brosa sat on her sheepskins and furs, half inside her curtains, tying his newly-braided bracers. They looked good on him, the thin, fine braids climbing up his thick wrists.
“Well, some are talking now, before the sun comes up,” he said. “Soon they’ll go to their ground nests and we can get close. But you need to learn stealth.”
Eðna drew her blanket up higher. “You think you’ll teach me to be stealthy.”
“Já, I think that.”
“It doesn’t come naturally to me,” she said.
A couple of days ago, he’d trimmed his beard into a point, and when he smiled, he looked impossibly even more mischievous and alive. “You’ll learn.”
They waded through the wet grass and slowly descended the hill to the woods. The sky was gentle and pale lilac, like a martin’s breast. Feathery clouds moved across the expanse. At the tops of the highest hills, long trails of mist rose from the ground to meet the clouds and disappear, incorporated. A hint of gold gathered just below the horizon. The sun would change the million tree trunks of matte white bark to silver in a quarter hour.
Her contacts worked sporadically, jolting her to attention once or twice a day, then slipping back into oblivion. Perhaps quietly continuing their work of remembering? Eðna couldn’t be sure they were recording anything, so she memorized facts and
