Subject: probably the most awkward email you’ve ever had

Hi Delyth,

I just wondered if you fancy hanging out and going for a coffee or herbal tea together sometime, outside of work? I don’t mean as a date if that’s what you’re thinking, although I’m sure you would be very lovely to date (shut up, Ottila). Actually I’m kind of dating the hot Greek guy from the cafeteria. Well, we’re in the process of getting back together after a brief break-up. That said, we went to the cinema to see Transcendence last night and we didn’t so much as taste each other’s popcorn. Is this TMI???

If you fancy having that cuppa, I can fill you in on all my gossip. I hate the word gossip. But maybe you like it. If you do, that’s obviously okay by me. My gossip is really boring but, on the plus side, I’m a chronic over-sharer, so chances are you’ll find out some terrible secret about me that will make up for all the stories about popcorn-touching that you’ll inevitably have to sit through.

Oh god, why is trying to make friends so awkward when you’re a grown-up?

Please excuse the weird formality of me contacting you via work email like this, rather than just talking to you in person, but I figured this way you’d get the chance to think of an excuse to get out of it, whereas if I ask you face-to-face you might feel trapped.

Hope your candlelit yoga session goes well this afternoon,

Ottila
