Jack arrived at the Snowflake Sugar Shop to find Rosie behind the counter, absentmindedly rearranging candy jars. Her usually bright green eyes were clouded with worry, and her fingers trembled slightly as they gripped a jar of pink and white striped peppermint sticks. He thought he’d helped her relax and rediscover the joy of both winter and candy making. But something was clearly bothering her.

He approached her with a warm smile. “Hey there, Rosie,” he said gently. “You look like you could use a break.”

“I’m all right,” she said, giving him a weak smile. “There’s just a lot on my mind.”

“Like what? I’m all ears.”

Rosie sighed. “Well. First, I’m still trying to figure out what to do with 100 lbs of Isomalt. Second, I caught that reporter trying to dig up more dirt on Sadie and Martin. She was asking odd questions to Mayor Evergreen and Eleanor Frost. Luckily, when the mayor found out she wasn’t with any magazine or news outlet, he stopped talking and told her to make an appointment. Something about the situation has me on edge. It’s like she’s up to something nefarious.”

He swallowed hard.

“Your idea of a break might be exactly what I need. I’m going to step out for a moment. I’m going to the post office to drop off a couple of online orders and grab some coffee. Do you want anything?”

“Sure, I’ll take a black coffee, no sugar.” Jack hoped he sounded normal and nonchalant.

“Alright, be back in a minute,” she said, giving him a small smile before slipping out the door, leaving Jack alone.

Jack wiped at the thin layer of perspiration on his brow. How odd. He never sweat. His body ran cold, and he preferred it that way. The stress of the reporter, and yes, the physical effect Rosie had on him, were definitely taking their toll—a sensation he wasn’t particularly familiar with.

Guilt about the reporter poking around weighed him down. News of the truth would destroy Mistletoe and, along with it, Rosie’s store. He had to do something, but first, he wanted to see the smile return to Rosie’s face. His eyes settled on the large front window, and an idea formed. Determined to lift her spirits, as he’d done by taking her skating, Jack went into the kitchen for supplies. While the Isomalt was melting, he shaved some white chocolate. When everything was ready, he carried his supplies to the front window.

With a deep breath, Jack began to work on his creation. Using the Isomalt and a
